Learning language without learning through structured grammar course is possible. It is like Chinese learning Chinese language in a natural day-to-day setting (be it books or conversations).
That would lead to my second point. That is, one needs a good exposure to pick up a language. Merely reading a few story books can't take you much further, even if you recite all the text inside out. You don't need to.
I cannot dispute the benefits of reading story books. My kid reads a lot of English books. Over time, she knows terms like 'what if..' 'what on earth..', or 'I wish I were..' without me having to explain these in grammatical context. Along the way, I was concerned at times, that she seemed to have made little progress in the language. But once she had gone through a particular threshold (e.g. building up enough vocab, language pattern), she was able to communicate in English proficiently. |
