Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

Just to add my two cents.

Sandrine 寫道:
.....I just wonder why you don't put your younger child to ESF kindy as well but instead send her to Anfield or YMCA?  Has your daughter tried Toddler's World of YMCA before?  How does it compare with Anfield?  I'm not sure which school offers better playgroups but eventually I want my daughter to continue thru kindergarten in the same school if she is accepted.  And I'm thinking about Anfield or YMCA.  Kingston is too expensive and Anfield is marginally affordable.

From the playgroup point of view, we had also considered tons before landing at YMCA Toddlers' World.  Anfield and Nottingham were also our top choices.  We gave up Anfield because our girl had language confusion and we were afraid that Anfeild's Putonghua session would confuse her more.  YMCA Toddlers' World was excellent.  Excellent teachers and the english environment helped my girl to develop her language.  She also learnt more regarding self-care and discipline.

....Instead YMCA is a non-profit Christian kindy but
- their classrooms are not as nice (classrooms along a long corridor, no outdoor playground)
- less Putonghua
....

I would also like to add that while the classrooms are small, I saw that they could manage quite well.  Singing, story time are done around a circle and they don't need much space.  They play toys at 2 separate tables.  Toys are stored separately and everytime the kids enter the classroom, different toys have already been prepared and laid on the tables.  They even manage to put some chairs for the observing parents. There are separate rooms for different activities: library for books, squash court for playing different balls, hall for playing bikes, slides, and there IS a outdoor playground on the podium.  One time they had their "lesson" in the swimming pool (accompanied by parents/guardians).

It is true Todders' World is purely conducted in Eng.  We kind of agree with YMCA's approach to introduce Putonghua gradually only at K2.

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

Wow thanks a lot Justjust.  It's kinda late but I can't help writing back to say thanks.  Reading your comments, I could visualize myself being in Toddler's World with my daughter.  You've covered every detail of the playgroup.  Now I feel much more relieved.  In fact, I've enrolled my child on their Toddler's World.  What bothering me was whether it was a right decision because there was a lot of good comments about Anfield too.

I learnt that some teachers of Toddler's World have left the Y and started their own business.  I wonder if that would affect the quality of Toddler's World, what I mean is are the remaining or new teachers as good? But I do believe there are lots of good teachers out there.

Thanks again.

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

Sandrine,

You are right.  Many of YMCA's Toddlers' World teachers left to start their own business.  This partially contributed to our decision to let our girl going to a pre-nursery nearer home.

On the other hand, you are also right there are many good teachers out there.  In between our girl had gone to Nottingham for a month or so and she met some YMCA teachers who also teach at Nottingham!  There are also good teachers at current pre-nursery that she goes to.

All in all, the operation of Toddlers' World is separated from that of kindergarten.  I still believe YMCA KG is good choice.  We handed in our application this Spring for 9/2005.

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

Justjust,

I haven't sent an application yet.  Perhaps I should do it now 'cause my girl should start K1 next September.  For your info, if your child has attended Toddler's World for 2 terms before admission, she will be given priority for the kindy.  I learnt this during their orientation last week.

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

From your comment, Anfield seems to be a good school but I've also read about comments that:
- some of their teachers are English-speaking but not native speakers?
- they are very commercial, i.e. lots of charges, e.g. application for K1 already costs you $800, application for playgroup costs $380
- the principal was more like a manager than an educator
- it's a profit-making organization

Any parents of Anfield or YMCA kids here please share your views.

Hi,
My two kids are in Anfield. They both attended Playgroud since they were 18 months old. I disagree with the comments above.
-- some of the teachers are Indians. They may know some Cantonese, but they are native English speakers.
--Apart from application fee (I think all schools charge application fee), they charge only tuition fee for playground and pre-programme, which included everything, even for field trips. For Kindergarten, they charge $300 misc charges every month in addition to tuition fee. And that's all.
--the previous principal worked in ESF for many years. The new principal comes from Australia. Both of them are educators.
-- Well, I can't say they are not profit-making, however, it is worth for your consideration as they provide high quality of teaching, environment, as well as facilities.

Re: Anfield

My daughter studied in Anfield since 1 yr 6 mths until 2 yrs 9 mths.  Anfield can provide you a very good environment, most of the teacher there are good and they can provide you a completed curriculum, however, Anfield is really a very commercial school, for my opinion, if you want your child to study in international school, Kowloon Baptist Church Kindergarden is a good choice! My daughter is now studying there for K2, most of the teacher there are excellent!  Anfield is good but if compare with KBCK, it is really a big different!

Hi Fiona88,

Could you elaborate a bit what you mean by commercial about Anfield please?  And how does it compare with KBCK?  I heard that KBCK is quite small.  I haven't visited the school but I'm considering KBCK for my child to start next year if she can get a place.  Thanks.

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

Hello,

Thanks very much for you all's sharings, I can get a lot of informations from this chatroom.

My son is only 3&1/2 months but I am trying to obtain some info about kindgarten. As I am a new comer in this, may I ask some silly questions:

1)What's the full name of ESF? And where is it located?
2)Is "YMCA International School" the same as "YMCA Toddler's World?"
3)For those 'first-come-first-serve' schools, can I apply now even my son is still a several months' old little baby?
4)After entering these International Kindergartens, is it necessarily to be continued by International primary schools? Can they change back to conventional schools afterwards?

Thanks again!
兩兄弟相親相愛, 一家四口樂融融! :)

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

From my own experience, Anfields is definitely a very commercial school. It was originally my first choice, I heard good things about it. When I took my son to see the principal discussing his enrolment and start date, the principal never talked or looked at my son except hi and bye. All she talked was about the school fees $$$$$, the costs of uniform, school bus fee etc. I just didn't feel right so I didn't let my son study there.

Re: ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR INT'L KINDERGARTEN?

Last year, the school fee of KBCK was only $2,100 per month, it was super value for money. The school site and facilities are quite old, also they have no fancy computers and amah, but the most important thing is they have very very good teachers. They used to have an extremely good principal(manager) too, unfortunately she has retired!

The teachers will love your children but would not spoil them. They are taught to be independent. Their address is 300 Union Road, I forgot the tel no.

You should apply very early and yes, it's not easy to get in, there is a long waiting list each year. Good Luck!
