Dear all,

please share your kids's school life in the RC!

homework load?
any project need to do?
how the school to assess the kids?
any test and exam?
will they have a report slip?
do the school have any reading scheme?

please kindly to share?

Hi,

My daughter is year 4 in RC, please let share my info to you
homework load? less homework, usually finish at school.
any project need to do? sometime
how the school to assess the kids? teacher will teach them via play and assess every child. I can know what happen at school and how she is learning through the progress report.
any test and exam? No, only dictation but not often.
will they have a report slip? sure!

do the school have any reading scheme? No, not insist. teacher encourages student to reading everyday if possible.

please kindly to share?

Hi! My son is also in Year 4 at RC. However, my experience is very different from ROHIT.

Homework: Daily spelling task, daily math exercise, daily typing, daily reading log, daily Chinese website reading. Writing exercise maybe once a week, sometimes finish up project or other exercises from school. Chinese homework include reading, writing and exercise.

Project: Yes, they have to do a project for each unit of inquiry. It can be powerpoint presentation, science experiment, etc. But they usually work on the project at school. They would need to research on the topic at home beforehand.

Assessment: For English and Math, the child is continuously assessed at school, meaning that you will not be informed about tests. However, they would conduct reading, writing and math assessments at each unit to find out their progress. For Chinese, there's dictation and exam at the end of each term.

Report slip: Yes, they have a report card twice a year.

Reading scheme: The children are expected to read at home everyday for at least 15 minutes and write down a reading log. At school, there's guided reading in small groups as well as individual reading. They also have library time once a week, and they can go to the library to check out books as often as they like.

Please check out the school website, and under each year level you can find a newsletter that describes in detail what the kids are doing at the moment.

RC is an IB school which really emphasizes on hands-on learning. So, reading and researching on the different topics and units of inquiry is therefore crucial for the kids' learning. The school is very open about what they are teaching, and it's really up to the parents and their kids to decide how much effort to put into the learning.

My views concur mostly with Hysterical.

ROHIT, was your child once with a local school? I think you need to step away from your previous local school life and step into RC more. Do not use the same mentality you had with your previous school.

Workload at Year 4 is not exactly light, unless you are comparing to local schools. On the other hand, some parents from the US or the UK think the workload is quite heavy, since many schools over there still believe in no-homework throughout primary school. I know that the 4 teachers in Year 4 have very different styles and their classes have different workload. However, I personally is very willing to trust what my child's classroom teacher believes in.

As Hysterial has said, RC is an IB school. At senior years, students are expected to take their learning in their own hands, which is a good preparation for university life. They need to have initiative in learning and be very disciplined in completing work and studying. And at primary years, especially from Years 4 to 6, the children at RC are gradually trained to be able to take up the challenging school life of senior years.

A lot is a going on at school and labeling it "teaching through playing" would be very unjustified for school life at Year 4. All tasks, works, and activities are with a purpose. Even when they sing in music class, they have been singing the Number Songs (about multiplication). Children do enjoy school and I am sure children who have previously been with a local school would definitely find life at RC so much more fun.

Parents need to be more involced. Read all emails and newsletters. Be more involved at school, by involving or helping out in class or at RAPT. Read the School Dairy from cover to cover. The Reading Log is there. If you still think workload is that light and your child has so much free time, ask him/her to read more. There is no such thing as reading too much. Make sure your child has chosen books of the right level. Many children who have once been in local schools have not developed a proper reading habit yet. Some choose books that are too easy, some choose books that are too difficult, some simply do not like to read at all. Ask your teacher for suggestions on how to choose the right books.

I am sure some other RC parents would want to share views too.

I am not sure my son can enter Year 3, 2008 or not. I just apply and received the invitation letter for my son assessmeent test on 7th April. I hope he can pass the assessment test.
