My son is starting year 1 on 21 August.
I still haven't buy the school uniform for my son.

The parent notice says that the PTA shop will be opened on 14 August, and it says (for Year 7 Hillary and Scott), does it mean that we can not buy our uniform on that day?

Does anyone know when the Year 1 uniform will be
available for sale at the PTA Shop?

How about the other Year 1 parents? Have you bought

as I am wondering if one set of PE uniform is enough or
not. Also, if the kids need to change the uniform at
school?
By the way, per the uniform list, are School Bag and
House cap are compulsory?

There are two PE lessons per cycle, one is on the specialist day, i.e. if your child is P1, his/her PE will be in Day 1, another one is called "games", will be in any other Day. Your child's teacher will give you a timetable. Your child have to wear PE uniform to school on Day 1, no need to wear PE uniform to school in the other "Game" day but need to get change in school.

School cap and bag are not compulsory. You can get any from elsewhere, but school cap better be the same colour as your child's House colour and your child's teacher will tell you which House your child will be in. They need to wear cap if they want to play under the sun or they can only play in the covered areas.

I remember that on the orientation day,
the principal said that the school bag is designed for use in school, they just fit the cubbies. (he said that the campus is not big enough for students to put their school bags here and there, they must put them in the cubbies)
And that they don't want children to carry fancy school bags.

That's only what they recommended, there're lots of different school bags everywhere. Just buy one similar size as to SJS school bag. The problem is if you get a bigger bag, it wont fit into the cubby hole & it will be lying on the ground. That's what they dont want to happen because it's danger if school bags are all over the floor.

Just curiosity about the class name. As I know all ESF
school will name the class with the teacher's initial.
But why SJS name the class in numbers? Is this was
start from the very beginning?

The class name starts from P1.1, P1.2, etc to P1.5, then P2.1, etc....They started this right from the starting of the school, i.e., nearly 20 years ago, no special reason. Not all ESF school use teachers' initial as the class name.

hi kathiema,

May I know if they are complusory to wear white sneakers only on their PE day? or could they wear other colour sneakers?

Will they allocate to other class after they promote to P2? like P1.1 to P2.3? Will they stay the same from P1 until P6?

Hi cpmummy,

It is not compulsory to wear white sneakers, but recommended. If your kid is P1, better get him/her slip on, i.e. no shoe laces.

P1 students will be shuffled when they go to P2, and there wont be any changes unless special case which is seldom happened.

Hi Kathiema,

I'm also interested in the class streaming policy of SJS. Does it mean Y1 students will be allocated to different classes for doing Y2 based on "shuffle", not the assessment results? I dunno. But if the class allocation has something to do with assessments, that will exert pressure on the kids.

Hi mingrace,

The class allocation has nothing to do with assesement result. The assessments are actually for parents & teachers to find out what support is most suitable to which child or the strength and weakness of each child. They do have different ability groups in each class.

They have music lessons, but it's only simple, like triangle, drum, songs. They will have recorder starting from P3. They have afterschool orchester but it's only for children who know how to play instruments. If you want your child to have violin, piano lessons, you have to pay for the outsider providers.

Honestly, there aren't too many choices of afterschool activities provided by school. Your child's teacher will give out letters, you better check your child's reading bag daily. Well, ask your child if there's any letters from school first, just to give them some responsiblities. My advice is to read with your child daily and remember to write the reading record.
