英基新校聘IB專家任校長,首重師資培訓

由英基學校協會轄下教育服務公司籌辦的全港首間私立獨立學校,啟新書院(Renaissance College)將於明年9月開課....啟新書院小學每年學費62,500元,中學每年學費86,000元,均高於現時英基轄下受政府資助的學校....

Hi,

It seems that this school is good regarding its design of curriculum and teachers' qualities. This is also one of my target primary schools for my son.
But what about the other ESF primaries? Are there any IB experts hired to do the study of curriculum?

Renaissance Colleage (now Phoenix International School in Cheung Sha Wan) will be located in Ma On Shan, very near to the Hang On KCR station. They just have primary and secondary, no kindy.

ruby1219 is right. Phoenix students will transfer to renaissance 啟新 in sept., 2006, the curriculum is being developed to reflect the int'l sentimnt of the IBO mission statment, and in empathy w/ the ib of curriculum reform currently developing in local HK schools. ESF have kindergarten at Tsing Yi

And the big news of Phoenix is the new Principal of Renaissance College is Mr. Peter Kenny, Who is a wellknown & highly repected IB administrator & leader, the new school will benefit enormously fm his leadership and expertise, he will join phoenix on January 2006.

So nice to hear that (about the new principal). My son is already in Phoenix P.1 now ! I do think it's a good school. It's so unfair that many parents (including myself before) treat it as a second choice to ESF schools. So, it's now good that it finds its unique positioning to differentiate from ESF schools.

Agree with you. With the new principal coming from IB, parents will have more confidence in Phoenix to run IB programs from primary till secondary. This is a very good alternative to existing ESF schools, which will only offer IB Diploma in future. Besides, Phoenix offers a lot more Chinese studies than ESF schools.

Just wonder how the PYP and MYP programs of IB in Phoenix differ from the general ESF teaching method?

Hi, I'm also glad to hear that the new principal will be on board soon. Additional to their attractive campus, it should be another good choice of high school in N.T. However, I just knew two parents whose kids are ex-Phoenix students. They transferred the kids to other int'l school because most of their classmates speak cantonese outside the classroom. Any comment?

Speaking Cantonese outside classroom cannot be avoided as the new Phoenix has to accept at least 70% local kids as per their agreement with govt. So far if the English standard of students is high, what's the problem of speaking in their mother tongue after class? We are afterall Chinese, it is not shameful to speak in Chinese.

Even ESF Shatin Junior's students are mostly local Chinese. The mix of students is different in every IS, depends on the location.

I just want to understand more if PYP and MYP is better than the UK system. Can anyone advise?

I agree with you, PYP also emphasizes the learning of a second language and the learning of mother tongue.  From the SJS web site: "The PYP will encourage our children to be global citizens."  Speaking English only makes the students become ABC, BBC or CBC.  Multilingual abilities make the students become global citizens.

Of course, it is not shameful to speak in Chinese, the parents may worry about their students' English abilities.  If the students don't use English in daily life communication, their English may not be fluent enough for daily communication. Classroom English is different from casual talk.  In the real world, few things are totally right or wrong.

You may visit Shatin Junior School's web site to find out more about PYP.  The FAQ page has lot of information about how PYP is different from the original UK system.

Thanks for your info, Alexlui. In fact I am not concerned with PYP, as my daughter is now in ESF primary already, and I am considering applying Phoenix for Year 7 or going to ESF secondary. So I want to know if IB MYP is better or not.

Anyway, I have asked Phoenix and they will have an information session on Nov 26 soon.

Besides the IB program, will you also compare the facilities / environment of the school to some ESF schools? I think RC has an excellent school and facilities that my child will take advantage of it. How about the facilities and school environment of SJS? Any parents of SJS please advise.Thanks!

Dear friends,
My son is 11 years old and studying P.6 in a local school . I've applied this school for him. The school will hold an interview after Chinese New Year. Can anybody give me some advice? What will be asked during the interview? How should he prepare for the interview? Is the chance big since he is not from an ESF primary school?

My daugther now study in p.1. For p.1 interview is very easy just draw a drawing and ask simple question by foreign techer. But, my freight same as you have a sons about 10 years old last year apply fail due to english standard not meet their target. So, I think most important thing is patice english conversation with your son.

But, new school in ma on shan I checked have vac. total include primary and sec. have 2,100 people. So, great chance than last year apply.

Thanks for your informaton. I'm looking for an english tutor for him. Yet I'm not sure whether he will be picked up for interview. The letter only said that there would be an interview after Chinese New Year.
