Hi Kawai,
We first went to see Dr Trodd on Sept 10, 2005. We were given 3 supplements plus Diflucan. The 2nd time we went to see him, we were given 2 more supplements plus B12 shots (twice a week). Since his tantrums are getting worse, we were told to stop one supplement and started another course of Diflucan.
Q1. Do you think we should have added one supplement at a time instead of a few at the same time?
Q2. I just browsed on the internet and found about "yeast-free diet". I was told that "Diflucan" is used to kill the yeast. However, we were also given acidophillus powder. According to the article on internet, it helps yeast to grow. Anyone has heard anything about it?

Is your son taking the following supplements?

Diflucan (7 days per treatment)
DMG+B12+Folic acid
Micro Minerials
Probiotics
L-Glutathione
Super Nu Thera
B-12 injections (twice a week)

Correct me if I'm wrong. Yes, Diflucan is an antagonist to the probiotics. A few hours time gap is suggested for these two supplements. My son has developed irritative behaviour when taken the L-Glutathione. I've given it up after a few days of trial. Dr. Trodd suggested us to reintroduce it 2 months later. During second time it was pretty sure that my son couldn't tolerate the L-Glutathione as the side effect came back again. He's now using the TD-Glutathione for rubbing on skin once before bed. Besides, my son hasn't had good response after 2 treatments of Dufican and even of Nystatin. I finally ordered the Grapefruit Seed Extract for yeast control. It worked significantly by decreasing his degree of hyperactivity.

For the Q1, yes, you should gradually introduce the newly added supplement one by one with a lower dose in the beginning. You know, we're the perfect person to observe which supplement is beneficial our kid even Dr. Trodd can't tell about it. Reaction of side effects should be closely observed by the family as well as the school teachers.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

It's like going back to school again now as a parent of ASD kid. Everytime I'm informed of something new, I need to do "research" on it.

Yes, you got it almost right for the supplement we've got for our son.
Except:
1) Diflucan : we were told to give 14 days per treatment course. And this is our 2nd course already...

  (he's only 3)
2) we stopped L-Glutathione about a few days because of his BIG tantrum problem.  It's really horrible..... Tantrums are less and milder now but still much more than before this biomedical treatment.
3) I stopped the probiotics today....because I went thru the internet again and think if it is a yeast problem, then I should give probiotics now.
4) How do you learn about the Grapefruit Seed Extract ?  It sounds natural to me and I'm really want to try it on my son.  At least I feel more comfortable than using Diflucan or Nystatin(<-no idea what it is

: ).  Can I get this from Dr Trodd's clinic?
5) My son is also taking cod liver oil (2.5ml) each day and just started "Lithium" (3 drops per day) because his hair test report shows his extreme deficiency in Lithium.  Dr Trodd said Lithium will help him to calm down.  We were also given Authia cream but I think I'd better start it later since his tantrum problem is not fixed yet, right?
6) And yes, B12 shot twice a week.  I just gave my son B12 shot at Dr Trodd's clinic last Saturday.  And I'm going to give shots to him by myself from now on. (we live in Kowloon City, so it saves us a lot of time)
7)Since we started the biomedical treatment one month, we do see some positive signs on my son's behaviour...like some very good, long eye contact(5 to 10sec... it's very LONG to us), more awareness, more focus, etc.  I almost cried when my son first looked into my eyes for more than 5 seconds.  It's like he just knows me.......he is 3 yrs old already...

Anyways, we then see a lot of BIG BIG tantrums and the +ve improvement in behaviour seems to fade out...

I just have no idea what has gone wrong.
Could it be the yeast problem that Dr Trodd described? If this is the case, it seems to me that Diflucan is not working well. This is the 2nd course already and today is the day 10 of 14. Do we need to put on yeast-free diet as well?

Hi ultramom,

Yes, you're right.  Dufican is for a 2-week treatment.  Dr. Trodd usually will give Nystatin followed by Dufican which is also for yeast infection.  Since my son couldn't tolerate both of them.  I didn't follow Trodd instruction and stopped it myself without telling him. I think your son may be feeling better after finishing the Dufican if the problem was caused by L-Glutathione or the Dufican.  Don't be too panic, we've been gone through the same pathway like what you're worrying.

For the Grapefruit seed extract, I learnt it from other parents through Yahoo parents' group.  It's a non-drug solution for yeast infections.  My son has taken one course which was 7-10 days only.  Started with 1 drop in the first 3 days then increased to 2-3 drops once a day.  It's suggested to stop the probiotics during the treatment as GSE will kill the yeast as well as the friendly bacteria.  Resume the probiotics after the treatment is important and needed. I suggest you to join the Yahoo parents' group and spend lots of time to learn from other parents.  You will become knowledgeable about bio-treatments in a short period of time.

Besides, I've no idea about yeast-free diet.  I only help my son to control sweet, avoid artificial sugar and colors, GSM etc...

Fully understand your feeling as my son is also only 3 years old and he started to visit Dr. Trodd three months ago. Similarly, I got same supplements as yours from Dr. Trodd except no B12 shot.

In fact, before putting on the supplments, I stopped dairy milk to my son and gave him soy milk instead.  I found that his eye contact instantly improved.  After taking the supplements, I have to say that I do not see much improvements but he definitely speaks more than before.  But this may be due to his other trainings in speech or because he went to school (I let him start school only after I know his problems) June.

Dr. Trodd is only the DAN doctor in Hong Kong and I have no doubts on his profession.  However, every ASD child has different problems (though they have common A-features), Dr. Trodd also needs to try each and single supplment on each kid.  I personally do not prefer to drag on too long to wait and see.  Moreover, he cannot communicate with my kid as he will only watch him for a while and then ask us parents his reaction or developments.  He has no direct contact or communication with the patient himself!

May I know if your son is now attending school?  Does he study in normal kindergarten or those with I-seats?  I think school life can help our kids a lot on daily routine and social communication.  Also, we all parents here are eager to provide whatever trainings or lessons to our loved ones.  Maybe you could search for some which suit yours, if you have not done so.

Ultramom, don't get too upset, we all have similar experience, if not worse!

Hi Justin2002,
My son just turned 3 in August. He was diagnosed as PDD/NOS when he was 21 mths old. So, he went to a regular kindergarten in Sept 2004. He spent a full school year then but not much progess could be seen. The teachers didn't even mention anything different on my son, except that he is still non-verbal. But they said it's just speech delay. We are on the waiting list to I-seats. My son started pre-school at Matilda this Sept. Plus we just let him start an intensive ABA training (just started 2 days ago). Plus speech therapy, S.I. therapy and OT. They are all private. The government doctor wouldn't recommend any of these services to my son because he thinks it won't help.

My son is going to do the DMSA provocation test this weekend. That means he needs to stop all his supplements. So after that, I think I will re-introduce the supplement one at a time. Just wondering how long should I wait before adding another supplement (3 days, a week or more?)
Oh, I just got the B12 shots from Dr Trodd's clinic and I'm going to do it myself at home tonight

I've just rang the Eye Q's salesman to place the order, he said they still offer buy 6 get 1 free, ie pay for 6 and get 7 in total. Actually the offer is the same as I firstly met him. BTW, the liquid is out of stock and expecting to be in stock in around 2 weeks time. And I try the capsules this time.

hi Ultramom,

I am not an experience mom in using the supplements. In fact, my son only takes quite a few supplements from Dr Trodd as compared with other kids. According to my record, I usually add a new supplements after 3-5 days and I will start from a lower dosage and progressively increase to the normal / recommended dosage. If severe side effect is found, drop the latest supplements and see how my son's reaction. If no improvement for any new supplement that has been taken for 2-3 months, check with Dr Trodd and drop it. Sometimes tantruming may be due to other reasons, like new therapist, different environment etc., so I would recommend you to reduce the dosage of some supplements first instead of dropping all and wait to see the effect.

Did your son take the ABA session at AP's office today? I saw a new chinese boy this afternoon that I never met. He is non verbal but is very cutie. His head is round and big like a ball.

Thanks for your tips. My son is going to do DSMA provocation test this weekend. So he will stop all his supplements. After that, I will try to re-introduce the supplements one at a time.
No, my son takes ABA training at home from another organization. However, he is non-verbal and does have a big head, and in my eyes, he is very cute too.
