perfect pitch

Re: perfect pitch

hey Sindy:

It's likely that your girl has perfect pitch.  Are you only using C major to test her?  Or are you striking the keys randomly? Try asking her to sing something like B flat or F sharp and see if she can sing the pitch exactly.

BTW, having a perfect pitch may be a merit, but not the sole key to a good music learning.  If she really has a perfect pitch, you may want to enrich her musical experience by other means as well.  (e.g: Give her piano concerto/string quarter and see how many voices/layers she can hear!)

Cheers!

Re: perfect pitch

比個do... 唔駛唱do, re, mi, fa,so,la, ti, do咁去搵音...........

Re: perfect pitch

Re: perfect pitch

How old is your daughter?
I myself have perfect pitch. I can hear any note on the piano and tell you what it is. If I'm not given any notes and I have to sing you a note, then i need a bit of time and it would be a bit off sometimes. so I figure there're two types of 'prefect pitchers'. 1. perfect at note recognition. 2. same as 1. but also perfect at note production. I don't know if it's born or trained. but i believe training might help. but with a person who has no music sense then no amount of music training would help. (just like sports etc).
For aural skills having perfect pitch would help a lot but as you said there're also a lot of other training like memory and chord recognition. but that's more to do with the understanding of music theory and how music is made, rather than listening. because for perfect pitchers knowing notes is never a problem. there's of course advantage to music learning. but i remember when i was little how I went through the tough exercises that my teacher gave me. that probably played an important to my musicality. by the way, I got a music degree from university. and I personally am passionate about music.
Try a little fun game with your daughter: play 2 notes at the same time on the keyboard and see if she can tell you what they are. then build up to three, four, five..... it's fun to do and also it trains her to active listen. then gradually train her to listen to chords (major, minor, dominant 7ths etc etc); intervals... just like aural tests.
I normally score prefectly at piano exams for the aural part.

Re: perfect pitch

For me, having perfect pitch only helps me to be more musical. for example I can play a tune back much more easily than a non perfect pitcher. and aural skills come more naturally. that's about it. if I have to play an instrument well, actually, the secret is lots and lots of practice. and of course you have to have the passion for music. I think not everybody has perfect pitch. maybe 1/10? or 1/50? I haven't done any real research. but how early you start taking music lessons and how you learn it do play a part. I can tell you, more pianists have perfect pitch than singers.
my mother never really cared too much about my perfect pitch. she cared more about how long I practise the piano. but if you want to help your daughter, as I said, work on her aural skills. also, try music dictation with her. play a short single melody on the piano and let her write it down. (if she's good at note writing. but 7 yrs old if she hasn't started theory yet then maybe she can't dictate yet). but since note recognition comes so natural for her, I would suggest you put meaning in the training. example: instead of playing any notes, try playing a chord. ask her to name the notes first, then ask her what the chord is (major or minr) etc etc. as far as I remember your daughter doesn't use Do Re mi. it's a good time to start getting her familiarize with do re mi because it expands her musicality.
sorry for such a long post. as music is my favourite thing I can talk forever on this subject.
I got my music from UBC Canada in piano. I also play the double bass and some violin.
one thing I know that having perfect pitch definitely helps is singing. studying voice (singing) is also a fun thing. imagine your daughter being an opera singer...
my daughter is only 2 yrs old. i can't really teach her music yet so we just sing silly songs all day long.

Re: perfect pitch

yes i agree with Rachelthew that having perfect pitch would definitely be a big advantage when you learn a stringed instrument. (violin, viola, cello, bass)

Re: perfect pitch

Re: perfect pitch

Hey

Long time no see!  From your previous post, I've already known that your son is very sensitive toward sounds. If you want him to have perfect pitch, you can train him systematically to get it.

However, considering that he is so reactive over different pieces, I'd rather suggest you to teach him music appreciation through analyzing pieces by ears.  When I was young, I sometimes became over-reacted with music/literature, too.  I viewed it as my lack of knowledge/maturity to appreciate the materials.  That's why I could be overwhelmed sometimes.  The more I learned about different musical/literary styles and their theories behind, the less I was overwhelmed.  If you know how to gain control of his feeling, he'll be able to master music pieces very quickly.  His perception of music as a whole would also be much deeper than before as well.
