我知道ESF對小朋友要求不高,而懂溝通便可以,但自己不是target ESF, 亦不知其他IS對英語的水平要求,故才想「及早」準備。

If you are talking about application to kindergarten or Year 1, most international schools mainly require that a child can communicate in English. So the process itself is not harsh.
It only seems to be hard because there are a lot of applicants. (Not only ESF, but other international schools have lots of applicants.) Those that did not get a place are mostly, I would say, unlucky.
However, application to secondary school is a lot harder as the level of english required would be a lot higher. Many schools have written entrance exams for english and math. And they need to see your academic performance from previous school (report cards, reference letters from teachers, etc).
