Hi, thank you so much Kyle for sharing all the great information - this is the only thread at BBkingdom that I keep reading again and again...
I am writing here hoping that my experience will help some of the parents who have recently found out their children are on the spectrum.
My son has just turned 6, and he was only diagnosed with ASD (Moderate) last February. We have done quite a bit in the past year, and have seen very good progress in terms of social skills, speech and behavior (I won't say he is "recovered" from ASD, I don't think these kids can ever be fully "recovered", some of their characteristics are really part of their personality, what my husband and I are trying to do is really to remove as much barriers he is facing and bringing out our son's best potential. In time, I also think that the society would be in a better position to accept this neurodiversity).
My son had the following physical and behavioral symptoms that exhibited ASD: severe constipation since birth, had "white" dots on his skin, picky eater, really "shy" in front of strangers, can get very anxious in situations (he used to have separation anxiety), has motor and speech delays (although he speaks at home, he rarely talked in class), didn't play with kids at school and playgrounds, quite rigid with some of his routines. On the other hand, he never did head banging, flapping hands, lining toys up, spinning etc. He also used to be really healthy and "fatty" until age 3, then he stayed at same weight for 2 years and got quite skinny.
Since February last year, we did/have done the followings:
GFCF and GAPS diet
Acupuncture
Biomedical treatments
23andme genetic test
Bio resonance therapy
craniosacral therapy
Homeotherapy
kinesiology
brain balance programme (only a couple of sessions)
ABA therapy
Play therapy
Music therapy
Speech therapy
OT therapy
PT therapy
For my son, being on GFCF and GAPS diet, and removing the food that he is sensitive to (milk and egg) were essential. Since we start the treatments, he only eats organic meats, vegetables and fruits (with a very small portion of rice - for his school lunch). We only keep a couple of gluten free biscuits as snacks. The test he had through the doctor showed that his main problem was high on Glutamate (which aligns with Dr Amy Yasko's belief) and too much calcium, and having this "clean" diet is important to remove those from his system. His results showed that he is not impacted by heavy metal. His recent blood test shows that the glutamate level has been down. His constipation is gone and has nice poo everyday. His white spot is also gone (I read from Dr Martha Herbert's book that it could be caused by deficiency in essential fatty acid). He is on around 15 supplements per day, with MB12 injection.
From our experience, the most helpful treatments for him include: Biomedical treatments, craniosacral therapy and Homeotherapy. I think ABA, speech and OT therapies are important too but they are really just "training". We found very little gains from bio resonance therapy.
So for those who have just started this journey, I would suggest the following:
- test food sensitivity
- be on GFCF or even GAPS diet (removing carb has helped my son's absorption of nutrients), avoid processed food even though they are gluten free, learn to read food labels
- consider biomedical treatments (seeing a doctor is important since blood test will show a lot of what your child's problems are and what help he/she may need). This is not a one-off but a continuous process to monitor how the child is doing with the different supplements, and if the toxic stuff are getting out of the body.
- do a 23andme genetic test
I will list out the books that I have read and found useful in my next message.
