Re: study in UK

Full Boarding .

School fee range  (including boarding fee)
UKP 150K - UKP 250K one year.
Normally schools are 1-4 hours train from London ...

Within London  downtown (walking/underground easy distance ) most of the schools are only day schools, seldom boarding ..

Re: study in UK

Boarding schools in UK, that I searched ...

St. Swithun's
St. Catherine
Cheltenham  Ladies'
Rodean
Badminton
Wycombe Abbey

If you want to seek ranking of schools, you can go www.bbc.com or try the British Council in HK.

I will not choose the one with too many Asian.   I prefer the one with mix -culture.

Yes. full boarding means lives in school.

She did not starts yet, but try summer school few times  and enjoyed .

Cheers !

Re: study in UK

If you have such plan pls try to get info 2 years in advance. normally for posting infor, sending registration fee. the other year for entrance exam..

That means you need to starts when she is P4.

You may try to send her to Uk summer camp first . let her try ..

Acutally I have no relatives and friends there. All my info are collected by searching through web.  All work is done and arrange by myself.  Just try .

You are welcome to pm me anytime.

Re: study in UK

schools that my friends went to:
girls:
Malvern
Headington
Cheltenham Ladies
Wycombe abbey
Harrogate
Rodean
Queen Anne
St Leonards-Mayfield

Boys:
Bedford
Stonyhurst College

Ask for Prospectus. They are very willing to send one by post. Application is about a year before proposing entry.
Read BBC education website regarding GCSE/A-level result and league table.
Try not to choose those in London. I think you would like your child to enjoy studying in a school with a nice environment. Your child won't be able to go out shopping by herself anyway during her junior years. So, if location is something to considered: not to far away from your guardian, not too far away from airport (within 2 hours drive) better.

Re: study in UK

boarding after P6: maybe too young and parents are worried, but it's a very suitable age to really get along with the local students and they can master english better. i know a girl from a local hk school who went there after P6 and she became head girl during her upper sixth.
after F.2 is also OK.
but not later than F4 would be my advice.

Re: study in UK

I wonder why you want to send the girl to there when she is so young. My hubby is civil servant and will be retired when my girl is 17. Even I need to pay the whole after my hubby is retire but I still don't want to let her go there when she is so small.

I agree at least F3 and at least she can learn more chinese and of course she still remember she mom when she gets bigger.

I have a cousin who went there after primary and she married and lived there and only come back to HK to visit her parents for twice for over 20 years.

I really don't want to lose my girl and I don't think I am selfish because when she is so young, she is so simple and cannot think the right way and choose the right road for her future. It is especially easy to be influence by her friends especially when she falls in love with the guy there (as she is lonely there).

The advantages of sending the kids over there maybe is the speaking accent only but is this the most important overall? I won't consider to put her so far away before she is 15.

this is only my advice and if you really want her to be more independent, you can send her to some summer school for 2 months when she is in summer holiday and I think it also works.

Re: study in UK

thanks for sharing, bau.

i agree that sending kids overseas for boarding immedately after primary schools is indeed a bit too early. But i know of some friends whom were being sent to UK boarding after P5 or P6 or F.1. maybe can share some of their stories.

They all attended local HK primary schools before leaving for UK-- eg Maryknoll, DGJS, HK wahyan. They went to Headington, Malvern, Wycombe Abbey, Stonyhurst etc.
They returned to HK every holiday, some even during the 1 week half term. Their relationship with family are very strong.

You worried about "losing your girl esp when she falls in love with a guy"-- if you sent her to a decent and good unisex school, i think this won't be a problem. Girls studying  in these schools are quite decent and virtually they do not have any chances of meeting many guys.
their career: 2 solicitors, 2 doctors, 1 pharmacist (3 of them now working in HK)

I would say that their basic chinese is still OK. Most of them have got married. Only 2 married british guys. But they do come back to HK once every year/2 years.

For those who went boarding after F.3 F.4- of course their chinese level is pretty good. most of them eventually returned to HK and work.
I agree that parents have to put in more effort in keeping a closer relationship with the kids if planning to send kids there so young. Most importantly, find a good school. Ideal age to keep a balance between good english and chinese level (only my opinion) is probably 14 (after F.2).

Re: study in UK

sure I know there are different case and maybe this is only my worry. I have 1 daughter only and I really can't imagine if she never returns to HK after her studying.

I am now selfish but I really think that the career in HK maybe in China will be very good and I really want to share the happiness and all unhappy with her in her youth and give her advice.

I also want to let her go out and have her eyes open wide and this was my dream (but I didn't since my family is not a rich one and I didn't want to be the burden of my parents) so I make a saving plan and hope she can go out when she reaches F3 or if she gets good results in HK, I don't think it is late to let her only attend degree course.
