Maybe your kid is a very smart kid before entering PN, so, their level does not match her/him, so, you did not notice 明顯進步. For my kid, I did note 明顯進步 after the 1st semester in PN.
For the language, give your kid more time, we cannot expect them to get use to a new language or master a new language well in 4 months time. While my kid was in KCS PN, she also did not like me speak to her in Mandarine and reacted greatly by saying I was not a teacher. Now in K1, I sometimes try to ask her simple questions in Mandarine, she answers me in Mandarine happily.
