Hi Ming 2,

Ming2,

Thanks for your advice.  So Pearl River is quite ok, right?

I think if the children is serious about piano, at the end we will need to change to a better quality one, and that's fine for me.

But for now, just for practice, I would like to buy a reasonable one at reasonable price, even we just use it for, like 2 years, is ok for me.

Would you have any suggestions?

Just went to Tom Lee at TST, they recommend YDO-140 Yamaha digital, said is good enough and most people buy for practice till grade 5. What do  you think?

Thank you!

I think you should consider at least a digital piano, and not an electronic piano.  The reason is obvious - the touch of the keys.  The approach to the touch of the "keyboard" and hand shape development are very crucial to the learning of piano.  Good hand shape together with good sense of touch to the "keyboard" is the no.1 thing during early development of piano learning.  Besides, it is very easy for a kid to develop good hand shape if the kid is conscious about that for the first few months.  Would your child be turning 4 yrs old soon?  Young children below 4 or 5 yrs old might have difficulty grasping the hand shape because their bones are so agile.  Still, a digital piano or a piano would be better than electronic keyboard because of the weight of the keys.  Electronic keyboard is good for "poking" around, and for recognizing the notes.  Also, the key-width of some electronic keyboard is even way smaller than standard size.  See if this is helpful.

Cheers,
Connie

Might be a little difficult to jump ahead for such a young child because the basic foundation have not yet been developed.  At an early age, (taking piano lesson for less than a year or two):

1) not able to read music accurately

2) Counting accurately might be problematic.(sense of rhythm might not be establised yet)

3) have not yet learned the relationship of scales/chords.

Perhaps careful selection of repertoire and do some fun pieces would help you to solve your concerns :)  Ex:  pick some popular tune such as Jingle Bells, Mary had a little lamb, red river valley, theme from Beethoven's no.9 symphony, etc.

Cheers,
Connie

回覆 4211# Kangaroo 的文章

this is a tough question to answer because each child is unique and work at different pace.  Besides, playing book 2 does not imply playing grade 2 piano materials.  It is just the 2nd level of that publication series.

IF we are talking about ABRSM standard, from grade 2 to grade 3 should be quite quick if grade 2 is "concretely" developed.  Expect around  6-8 months if grade 2 is really solid.  Again, the pace is different from student to student. Some of my students have just finished grade 2 exam in May and I've already enroll them for grade 4 exam for this Oct/Nov.  I encourage some of my students to take on more difficult intiatives because I know some are capable and are hard working enough to handle more difficult challenges whereas for those who just want to play piano as a hobby, we'll work out a plan that fit each individual's need.  In a nutshell, everyone's progress is different.  That depends on the student's objectives, commitments, and time constraints.  See if this helps.

Cheers,
Connie

  • Thanks. I always find it very hard to ask my son sit down and concentrate on practising piano. He practise 45min every day, but during this 45 min, he will practise sometimes and then go to drink water, come back and practise and then go to washroom, then practise again!! He loves playing piano, but he does not like to practise.

to Kangaroo:
Most children, especially young boys, cannot concentrate for a long period of time.  Their focus might last only 5-15 minutes at a time.  It's absolutely fine to take breaks.  As long as those 5-15 minutes are productive and are "quality" practice.  Several 15 minutes or 20 minutes sections a day should be sufficient.  One thing to note - it would be easier for the child to concentrate if TV, PSP, NDS, PS3, xbox, Wii, computer, etc. are not around visual distance, during practice and breaks (for tv, make sure it's off).  The reason is that children get distracted easily.  Any of those would arise their curiosity and thus distract them from doing what they're supposed to.  During breaks (if it's a long one), you can put on some music at the background for relaxation purpose.  Besides rock, pop, and heavy metal, any kind of music would do fine.

It is common for everyone to like to play the pinao, but don't like to practice.  (Not just for kids, more so to adults).  Reasons are obvious.  Because practice is hard work, playing is the result of practice and thus immediate satisfaction is much higher than practice.  Therefore the more details and concentrate the practice is, the better the playing will be.  I always tell my students that don't do "quality" practice this - Practice 10 minutes as if you have already practiced for an hour.  To achieve is that is super easy, super concentrate during those 10 minutes and I'll believe that you've practiced for an hour a day and I'll only trust my ear.  At the begining, I'll assign them less material (but gotta be details oriented). Once they get the hang of it, I'll gradually increase their workload and their concentration extends a bit.

See if this would help your son - ask if he wants to impress the teacher.  If so, tell him that the good news is, he doesn't need to practice more, rather, he could practice less if he is concentrated enough.

I hope this helps.  :)

Cheers,
Connie
