Geography and History and Science讀嗎?

It's not necessary to use English at home, even if you want to send your kids to international schools. Especially when both parents are not native speakers as it might do more harm than good. Don't do that.

I have seen many students transferring from "local" primary school to international schools smoothly without any problem. They'll pick up the langauge very quickly and can switch back and forth from English to Cantonese very well.

BTW, not all international schools are equal...

It's not all or none situation. Just don't artificially create an English environment at home when parents themselves also need to struggle to find the right words most of the time.

Yes, CherylMum, that's what I mean.

CherylMum,

Agreed with you that "I think most HK people (including me) will have richer conversation (and more vocabularies) when communicating in Cantonese and this will have more stimulation to the kids."

However, I've been communicating with my child in English since she was born as I thought that she could learn Cantonese from everybody else.  This way she could learn both languages and so far I haven't seen any problem, except that she seems to express herself a lot better in English.  I don't worry too much about this as I think she'll pick up the language when she starts school.

One thing I do insist is to speak either English or Cantonese and not a mix of them.  I speak English to my child and her caregiver.  To the rest of my family members, I speak Cantonese.

About language confusion, I got the impression that children can distinguish the sounds of different languages very well.  I found that when my child heard somebody say French, she wouldn't think that it was some English that she didn't understand.

Mandy

My daughter has been transferred to ESF from a local primay English school since this September. I never talk to her in English neither did I ever give her any NET tution. The first time when she touch English is already 4 years old. She don't have any problem in adapting her new school life.
Her ESF principal also point out that it is essential to master mother tongue well before you can master the second language.

i agree with Sandrine more

Even you talk to kids only in English, there are lots of opportunities for the kids to learn Cantonese if you are living in Hong Kong. No need to worry much.

And there are far less opportunities for the kids to speak in English if they are not studying in International school.
