Hello Hehemum,

I am a mother of a 5 years old girl and a KWIK maths teacher.  I taught my girl KWIK maths when she was promoting to K2 and now she is K3 and learning the multiplication & division course of KWIK Maths.

I am happy to know that other children are also benefitted from KWIK Maths as well.  One advantage for taking Maths in such a young age so that they can perform well during the primary school interview, as far as I aware that some private schools, like 九龍塘宣道小學 or SFA, they would ask the kids questions like 14 - ? = 9, 5 + ? = 12, 2 * 6 = ? and my girl can answer all of them easily.

In between 學林數 and KWIK Maths, it depends on what your child is not so strong at.

If he calcuates not quick enough or he uses fingers during calculation, then KWIK Maths would be suitable for speeding him up and building up his confidence.

If he cannot understand the questions rationally and come up with an incorrect formula, then I believe 學林數 would be more suitable for him.

For MT Maths, I am sorry that I barely know it that I cannot give out any opinion.  If any BK parents can you tell me more about it, would be appreciated.

As KWIK Maths is a speeding calcuation of + - x / basic skills, the sooner to learn the better, i.e. once they turn 5 years old.  So by the time they finish 2 courses (+ & - 12 lessons each (+ course for kindergarten children would be 20 lessons), they can perform better during primary school interviews.  Please note that taking KWIK Maths course, doing homework regularly (less than 10 minutes per day) is very important.

After another 2 courses (+- & decimal +-), they can pick up P1-P3's Maths easily.  At this stage, they might still need to use one hand as a tool from time to time.

After another 2 courses x & /, they would be able to perform better/faster throughout the primary school Maths and they can do calculation by heart, without using the hand as a tool any more.

Likewise, my daughter now in K3 she can calculate 64 * 87, 6874 / 7 without drafting sketch and come up the answer by heart without using the hand.  She is not fast at this stage but I foresee when she gets older she will improve on the speed.

As the children can do the Maths homework easier and faster, they can spare more time on the other subjects, like English and Chinese.

There are various Maths course available in the market, please check before you decide which one is the most suitable for your children.

Each Maths course has its own merit and weakness and fit different type of children.

For E-nopi, it is good for student that can take time to learn Maths gradually and prefer to communicate in English.

For KWIK Maths, kids can do hundreds + hundreds + hundreds after 12 lessons with the help of a hand (the non-writing hand as a tool).  As such for result-oriented things, like school interviews, school tests / exams, the children can improve on the scoring.   Eventualy after 4 courses, they can manage to calculate by heart natually.

However if you ask me if the young children (5 - 6 years old) can really understand the rationale or mechanism, I don't think they can understand it 100 percent (I even doubt if some of them can understand 50 percent ).  If they can understand it easily around this age, kindergartens should have taught them already.  On the contary, they manage to come up the correct answer with complicate additions and subtractions, so they are confident to do regular Maths in the traditional way later on at school.

There is free trail class offer by the KWIK centre, you can arrange one for your child first and see if they like it or not.

In the beginning (say first 3 - 4 courses), the children would relying one hand (5 fingers as a tool).  The key point is that they can pick bits by bits up easily and enjoy the calculation/learning process.

Since they are using the non-writing hand to do the calculation, both hands (one to calcuate and one to write down the answer) are used in the same time, the left and right brains are both stimulated.

Eventually at course 5 & 6, the relying of hand tool is taken away and can do all the calculation by heart without using fingers.

Is it too late to take this kind of course when kids are P.3 ?  It seems this method is good for younger kids which are studying in kinder.

Yes may be it's too late.  It all depends what the children are not good at, i.e. carelessly reading the questions, carelessly doing the calculation, can't do the calculation by heart efficiently.

I have students of grades from K2 up to P6,  I would say the younger (K2 - P1 before they start to develop the careless calculation habit) the better result for + & - , then for x & /, P4 & P5 (for those havn't take KWIK Maths + & - before) would be the golden time.  It helps improving the accuracy and efficiency of the children's calculation.

My daughter learnt KWIK and completed + - courses.  Though she was willing to attend lessons, she was not keen on calculation because she should do homework 5-6 pages every week.  Actually workload is not heavy but she did it slowly and sometimes made mistakes.  Maybe her interests was not in Maths.  However, it is quite a good chance to let her have basic knowledge before going to primary school and train her to calulate by hand & brain and she can get more confidence.  At least, she is not afraid to Maths.
