Re:Jolly Phonics (銅鑼灣教學日記)
Dear Stock,
Thanks for bringing up this interesting discussion. It seems that Beebee mami's performance comparison is biased because her son only spent 6 months studying Jolly Phonics while her younger daughter took about 2 years to learn Letterland.
We believe Beebee mami has registered a simplified and incomplete Jolly Phonics course for her son (learning only level 1 out of the 3 levels). It's a pity that she had chosen a wrong centre to learn Jolly Phonics, and the teaching there was substandard (missing the storylines for each sound). All the alternative spelling, e.g., /ee/ /ea/ /ie/… etc, are taught after level 1 of Jolly Phonics. I am sad to see parents fall into traps like that.
As a professional Jolly Phonics training centre, we offer a complete 3-level Jolly Phonics program covering about 100 sounds and alternative rules. Letterland, on the other hand, has a total of 64 sounds and alternative rules, which is roughly the equivalence of level 1 & 2 Jolly Phonics.
Level 3 Jolly Phonics deals with advanced phonics rules such as soft letter sounds ( e.g. "c" as /s/ in "city"), silent letters (e.g., silent /k/ as in "know"), as well as 3- to 4-letter spelling patterns (e.g., "ore", "eigh", etc). These are never mentioned in Letterland.
Also, Jolly Phonics accompanies each phoneme with an interesting storyline in addition to 4 other elements, leading to its well-known multi-sensory teaching approach.
It's a shame that Beebee_mami's son just learnt level 1 Jolly Phonics. Her experience indicated that many centers in HK opt to teach no more than the very beginning level because it requires professional knowledge and skills to instruct level 2 & 3 properly. At our centre, Dr. Jeff enhanced and expanded the original program with ten times more materials. And the teaching results are astounding. We have successfully trained K2 students to gain reading proficiency level of average P2 American children. On top of that, we also help many K3 students attain full mark in Cambridge Starters exam.
Hope this will answer your question!

你說的對。phonics係從字面拼讀。如果覆蓋範圍不廣,很難令小朋友見字能讀及對串字的幫助不大。
我兩個仔女分別學過 Jolly Phonics 及 Letterland Phonics。想在此分享我的經驗︰
