Questions to ask

1) any one tell me the daily schedule of the school as I cannot find any from the website?

2) we need to take school bus, will the music and swimming class be able to complete before the school bus take off?

3)how's your impression of the teachers in the school? are they frequently change teachers or the teaching team is quite stable throughout the years?

4) how to choose between French or Japanese, it sounds the curriculum of French more organized, Japanese more daily life related and the teacher sounded very genuine and engaging with the kids? what do you guys choose?

5) how many non-chinese speaking kids in the class, how's your kids' intereaction with them?

MANY MANY THANKS!

Ssdiana,

1) I think no school is perfect.  There is always room for improvement.
For the orientation session for the P.1 parents, I agreed that it can be organized somewhat better based on my last year’s experience.

2) Although TSL is regarded as a multi-cultural school, it is still a local English primary school but  just with “international feel”.   There are about 30% of non-Chinese pupils and 70% Chinese pupils in each class.
There are Multi-cultural Day to be held in every 1-2 years and French Week every year.
As the pupils are coming from about 18 nationalities, I think it is not easy
to hold cultural events for each country.

3) Most Chinese and non-Chinese pupils can get along with each other quite well.

4) School class starts from 8:30 a.m.and the pupils need to return to the school before 8:10 a.m.
You will not find such details in the school web site now until the first day of the school.
Normal music and swimming class will be finished before 3:30 p.m. so your child can take the school bus back home.   In case your child will join the extra musical instrument class or other ECAs, there are extra school buses serving certain locations only, depending on where you live.

5) From my personal observation, most teachers in the school
are very nice and devoted.
You can feel a very strong team spirit all the time.

6) As I mentioned recently, there is relatively more chance for the Chinese pupils to speak English in this school, when compared to some local schools,  because of the non-Chinese schoolmates.
But if you compare it to some international schools, there is still room for some pupils to improve.
To some extent, language environment can be “created” even at home if you speak English to your child and watch English TV channels or VCDs.
I believe education is always a joint effort among the school, teachers, parents and the kids.

Just to share my view from what I have observed since the very first interview.

1. the teachers are energetic
2. good school admin as things were well organised, such as admission interviews and orientation
3. proactive and student-oriented, as shown on Campus TV, the quality of the student-helpers and the range of ECA available
4. the teachers have to be highly devoted, as shown in the scale of their Open Day, the scale of the P1 admission, etc
5. highly transparent as shown in school's website

Do you have similar observations?

S.Potato,

I share the same view as yours, in particular that the school is quite transparent.

Parents of other older kids in school, can you share how you have facilitated the adjustment of your kids in school?

1) any difficulties your kids have come across in the first few months of adjustment? How did you help?

2) any new measures adopted from school to help p1 students to go through the adjustment process?

3)what interest class or ECA or music instruments you will choose for your children?

4) does your child join any music team in junior year?

5) any comments on French and Japanese teachers? who are more children friendly or able to engage with the kids in the learning?

Thanks

ssdiana,

1) First few months of P.1

- This will be the transition period from K3 to P1.
Perhaps you have to make your child go to bed earlier starting from August so your child can get up early in the morning to
catch the school bus, unless you live very close to the school.
From Monday to Thursday, the available time  will be quite tight from after school till the time the kid has to go to bed.
Both the parents and the child need to adapt to a new timetable.

2) ECAs

- Go to the school web site to click "Activities" and you will see all the details.

3) Musical instrument classes

- Again, go to the school web site to click "Curriculum" and then
"Music" and you will see all the details.

4) French or Japanese as third language

- I think the teachers are all nice.  You just need to consult with your child based on your own expectation and make the choice.

Just went to Waifat to buy the course books. The queue was veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery long! But we still could not buy all we need there. The guy said some books had not been ready yet so we have to wait until September and buy the remaining books at school.

陳炳記d PE 衫夠堅挺,好正,冇咁易wer.
校裙就白色布太張,且硬,但又冇咁易殘,不過就好似一張紙咁囉.
唔知明唔明我講mug 呢!:

Any parents know about how the school will select their child into choir or orchastra? Personal choice or school's choice?

ssdiana,

I am not 100% sure about the accuracy of my answer to this questions but I attempt to answer it as below.

Choir :-

It seems to be selected by the music teachers during the music lesson based on their criteria.

Orchesta :-

The school will distribute application form to the pupils and if your child is interested in any musical instruments, please fill in the form and return to the school and then an audition will be followed.

Hope some other parents can provide additional information.
