Jolly Phonics (銅鑼灣教學日記)

(cont' from 07-6-29)

Given the fact that the La Salle P1 student attends a very competitive school, he was going through a frustrating break-in period despite being quite proficient in English for his age. It was not difficult to tell that the boy's lack of confidence was holding him back.

Children who are uncertain about their abilities give out many warning signs. One of them is frequent complains about the difficulty of school work. This boy is no exception. After the first lesson, his mum told Dr. Jeff that her son felt that the phonics class was quite hard for him.

And we could see why. We deliberately taught this boy at a rapid pace, which we believed is the best way to build up his confidence. Regardless of his complain, we still trust that he has the ability to learn at least twice as quickly as he was willing to. And we bet that he would gain back his confidence in no time when he found himself reading English books just as fast as, if not faster than, his classmates.

His mum didn't seem to agree with our approach. She told us the same thing after the little boy completed the classes for the second week. Dr. Jeff explained to her again about our strategy but at the same time, offered her son an alternative -- a slower-paced class -- if she believed it would make her son feel better. Of course, such approach would take an even longer time to build up the kid's confidence. She finally decided to trust us and agreed to stay in the class for another week to see how it went.

Guess what happened? On the third week, the mum delightfully told us that the boy's confidence had finally come back! He had also been sharing with his friends about the phonemes he learnt recently at school. He was proud of himself because of his own progress, and he was totally different.

The mum brought her younger son to join our programs at the same time. And she asked us for more program material so that she could share with her friends.

As professional teachers, we know that all kids are different -- and all kids are special. But some kids are special in ways that present them and their families, friends, and teachers with more difficult challenges. We need to fine tune and personalize teaching strategies all the time!

Jolly Phonics (銅鑼灣教學日記)

The joy in teaching lies in seeing students build up. For the past few months, our teachers have been working hard to strengthen our students’ language capability, and we are finally reaping fruitful reward from our effort!

A girl in P1 joined our phonics program about one month ago. We noticed that she was very shy and unwilling to speak in English during the assessment. Such personality had caused her to lag behind in English skills considerably. Her mother knew that this was an obstacle to be overcome urgently. The girl thus then started taking lessons twice a week.

There is a range of different reasons that make students reluctant to speak in foreign languages. One of the most common factors is self-consciousness caused by initial failures in learning. If students develop a passive attitude towards English, their confidence in acquiring the language drops significantly.

We found out that this was precisely what the P1 girl had been experiencing in the assessment. Her avoidance made her progress much slower than children her age.

Building her self-confidence is our first priority! We use a combination of oral training and personalized lesson plans as well as giving her constant positive encouragement. Changes began to happen after a few lessons, and she began to actively participate in the classroom activities. On top of that, the customized phonic training helped her correct her pronunciation and improved her spelling. Most importantly, the little girl started to believe in her ability because she finally mastered a subject she had always thought difficult.

An episode happened in her primary school’s English class celebrated her success. Her native English speaking teacher wanted to see whether the students could pronounce a word that had not been taught before. The class immediately fell silent. At this moment, this little girl bravely raised her hand and gave a perfect answer. Her teacher was greatly impressed for she was very timid in the past and had never tried to talk in front of the class. Also, the teacher was surprised because her English has improved a lot recently. Finally, the teacher talked to her mum and acknowledged on the immense improvement she had made.

While her mum told Dr. Jeff the story in the school, her mum could barely hide her triumph smile.
