English nouns and examples
[size=medium]Count nouns: nouns that refer to individual people or things and have both a singular and a plural form.
book, child, doctor, town
[size=medium]Uncount nouns:: nouns referring to things such as substances, qualities, feelings, or types of activity, with NO plural form. They do not treat things they refer to as countable. To treat things as countable, they need a phrase like a piece of, a glass of, etc.
cash, emotion, truth, youth
[size=medium]Collective nouns:: nouns that refer to groups of people or things.
army, family, flock (collective count nouns);
police, public (collective singular nouns);
livestock, logistics (collective uncount nouns);
Olympics, Asian Games (collective proper noun).
[size=medium]Mass nouns:: nouns that behave like uncount nouns when they refer to substance, and count nouns when they refer to types or brands of substance. (In other words, they can either be in their singular or plural form.)
detergent, alcohol, perfume, cotton, moss
[size=medium] Singular nouns:: nouns that have NO plural form and are always used with a determiner.
ability, ground, law, mainland
[size=medium] Plural nouns:: nouns that refer to more than one thing, or treat the things they refer to as consisting of more than one thing. Many, but not all, of them end in -s.
binoculars, trousers, clothes, cattle, congratulations
[size=medium] Proper nouns:: nouns that refer to a particular person, place, time or thing and begin with a capital letter.
