Can anyone share, how did your kid progress from "reading aloud" assisted, to reading on their own - any tips? at what level do they change?

my children did not show habbit of reading till P1 but since then become a keen reader, I never asked them to read, just let them choose books or buy them books and read for them everynight, not pointing to words at all, no pressure, no hurry.

can anyone suggest which series of books can provide the progressive reading training ? I hope I can read the books every night using 15-30 mins every time/day/nite. Is it useful if I follow such kind of series of books?
I experienced that I picked the books from library but I just picked the books without any interconnection.

Apart from ORT & OST, my son (5years old too!) reads some very easy "chapter books"(for the beginner).  You could find from "Scholastic Inc.", eg. the series of "Henry and Mudge", "Toad and Frog"etc.

Let's explore to various books, no need to stick to one series (even it's a good one).

I don't know if these are available from the library or not.

Chapter book is the next step after reading ORT.  Kids like these.

Treetops are chapter books, Stages 9-11 are not difficult.  Jackdaws is a bit challenging, and may not be suitable if a kid just finish Stage 9 of ORT.  I think Robins is more appropriate in your case.

Toad and Frog is OK for kids who finish Stage 9 of ORT.

Thanks - let me check.

She has built up the habit of reading a new book everyday (but need to be supervised) so its more practical for me to borrow. After the ORT, I hope the Treetips/ Jackdaws etc w ...

For Tree tops, kids can finish 1 book in 1 go.  It is pretty short (32 pages with not many words in a page).  Normally, my son read it quietly first, then I will ask him a few questions to make sure he understands the book.  Or, I ask him to re-tell the story in own words.  Then, he needs to write comments, usually a few lines.  For each stage, I only buy two sets (i.e. 12 books) for him to read.

However, for other chapter books, like Horrid Henry (my son's favourite).  He need 2-3 days to finish one book (1/2 hr each day).

She is halfway through Robins already...

Do kids usually finish the whole chapter book in 1 go?  I think its a good idea to "assign" 1 chapter to her everyday, and leave her wanting more...

My son is not smart compared to his classmates.  He started reading quietly towards the end of P.1 (he is now P.2).  Reading aloud is a good exercise.  I still require my son to read aloud certain pages.  Last year, he read aloud every page and he told me it was too tired to read the whole book, so I suggest him to read it quietly first and then we chose a few pages for reading aloud.  I suggest that you may ask your kid to read aloud a few pages first and then ask her to read the rest (either a chapter or a book) quietly and then tell you the story.  Re-telling the story in own words at this stage is very good exercise.

For Chinese books, we do the same, reading 1/2 hours every day.  We now choose those with pinyin for reading aloud in putonghua and those without pinyin for reading quietly.  There are not too many graded Chinese books compared to English books.  I almost bought all the good available Chinese books for my son (except for those which are for girls).  Those published by sesame (sorry I can't type the Chinese name) are very good.  You need time to look around at the bookstore to find suitable books.  My son normally finish one book within 2 days.
