Please help ? HKU -- Dentistry or U of Manchester -- Medicine??

How to choose ?

My son is a bit prefer to Medicine. However, the cost is quite high for us. It is taking about HK$3M – 4M for 6 year study.  An uncle agreed to financial support (borrow money) for his study in UK. But, we need to pay him back with interest in a few years ( not fixed yet -- maybe 8 years) after his graduation. The interest may be 5% p.a. is still not yet confirmed the rate.

It is quite a big amount money for us. I do know whether it is worth.

I want to have your advice on the following questions :-

1.        Can my son pay back the money by himself when he comes back HK. From our rough calculation, he need to pay back the loan for around HK$50,000 per month for 8 years.

2.        Will the prospect of a Doctor and a Dentist a great different ? (in terms of job satisfaction and income )

Please help. Please I beg you all.

If you can help a bit for your son, medicine is a good choice because he wants that.

But he may face a financial difficulty of you don't help.

For a doctor, the starting pay is only 40,000 to 50,000 a month. After 5 years, the pay will go to around 80,000 to 100,000. The repayment will put a lot of burden to him in the first few years.

Also, it is very difficult for an overseas graduate to be licensed in HK as he will need to pass an exam with a very low passing rate (around 25%).

If your son fully understands this and is committed to studying medicine in UK, go ahead and don't regret!

If your son does not have UK (or EU for the present moment) passport, it is quite impossible for him to have internship after medical school.
If he has, congratulations! If he is good enough, he will be able to become a doctor in UK.
The pass rate for UK & US doctors in the LMCHK exam is 50%, that for mainland doctors is about 16%.
I hate politics but the pass rate for outside doctors (including mainland doctors) may significantly increase in the future if the medical council reform bill is passed in Legico today. So another option is that you can send your son back to mainland for medical school and come back for LMCHK exam, hence saving lots of money while achieving his aim of becoming a doctor in HK.

If studying in mainland, very hard to pass the exam... If you son is mine, I prefer UK medicine or HK dentistry indeed...

I think you need to discuss with your son the pros and cons and let home decide. If he decides to study in UK, I will support if I can help him a bit.

Studying in UK:
Pros
1) you want it
Cons
1) expensive-->future financial burden
2) licensing in HK very difficult
3) may not find a job in UK

You really need to make research on it. Don't think your son is smart, so that he can pass the licensing exam in HK. Almost all candidates attending the exam are smart and already licensed doctors overseas. You can imagine how hard the exam is.

其實我頭先好認真咁諗，你個仔仲有兩條路入醫科，不過都好難。

第一條路：重讀未攞5**既科目，用combined cert入（要首先查清楚受唔受combined cert和discount幾多）
缺點：
1）受到旁人不理解的目光，什至嘲笑
2）重讀都未必高左分，要個仔對自己誠實，有幾大可能會升grade，因為重讀係以一年作為成本，唔係講玩

呢個係唔正常人先會做，我未見過考咁好成績會重讀，好睇個仔讀醫的決心和佢自己的能力

2）先讀牙醫，第一年搏命讀搏轉科
優點：進可攻退可守
缺點：
1）其實機會好細，個個入得牙醫都叻仔，好難係the best 入面再做the best
2）違反佢意願，睇佢有幾討厭讀牙醫

Dear dativeboad and newdady,

Thank you very much for your valuable advice.

His teachers and principle advised that he should choose Dentistry. From the bottom of my heart, I also prefer Dentistry due to the financial burden and so many uncertainties in choosing Medicine in UK.

I understand my son. Whenever we force him to do something, he will strongly repel.
We would like or try to analysis the pros and cons of these two professions to him (Doctor and Dentist).

As such, we want to gather more information and advice, especially in the future income. Please don’t blame me that we are talking about money. We think that it might a critical point to convince our son.

Being a Doctor cannot guarantee for earn big money. On the other hand, you will be suffered for 8-10 years for the loan repayment. Some of our friends said that the income of Dentist is also comparable to Doctor or even better (hearsay only).

Do you have any figures, examples or government pay scale to support this statement.

Please help.

呢個2015年的，可參考。只比較公立，因為私家無數計，月球人都有，好難比較。
但記住，第一時實習好似無四萬幾咁多，我以前聽好似得萬零蚊。

第一年實習好少，可能大概兩萬卦。

牙醫由30點起薪（低醫生2點，醫生起薪32點），至44點。再升就無搵到，但和醫生差不多啦。
不過，牙醫實習搵幾多可能都兩萬左右卦，唔知幾多，但實習第一年唔慌多。另外，醫管局可能會接收大部醫生，牙醫係咪要咁多人真係唔肯定。我有朋友做牙醫都見佢好快出黎幫人打工開診所，好似卓健果D醫生咁。
你參考下，我都唔係行內人，唔係太清楚。

If the result of your son can be accepted by HKU BDS ,  he should also be accepted by CUHK medicine. In general, the score requirements are

HKU Medicine  >  HKU Dentistry  > or =  CUHK Medicine

How about your application to CUHK medicine ? Don't forget that there are 2 Medicine Schools in HK.
