Hi,

We're living in Shanghai. I've enrolled a Chinese Reading Course for my son during summer. I guess it's 中華字經' as it guarantee the kid can learn 500-600 words for stage 1 (100 days).  The mini. age requirement is 4 and my son is only 3.3 year. I don't expect too much, just for fun.  The course will start from July 4th, will update his progress if anyone is interested.

How much for the Zijing course at Shanghai?

it's only Rmb700/month + Rmb40 for material. Mon-Fri, 1-1/2 hour per day. Last for one month. I consider it's very cheap.  Or, they charge Rmb2000/month for full day, 9am-5:00pm, but I think that's too much and not suitable for kids. The teachers explained the course is most suitable for age 4-5 kids, can guarantee learn 500-600 words.

How much is the course in HK?

KinderU的暑期課程: HK$2880 / 15堂 (每堂1小時)  + HK$580 報名費（包括4本書+CD），他們一共會"教"約350字，但小朋友吸收多少就不知了。

I've been to the Chinese Reading Center, they are not using 中華字經. The Chinese teachers there said the creator of 中華字經 is a businessman and his method doesn't really work. The words they teach are too difficult for children (and adults) to understand, unless you have a very good Chinese language foundation.

I've stayed there for a while to see how they teach the children, they are using flashcards, seems keep repeating until the child can recongize all words, then add in some new words.  The 1st week is for warming up and she is confident that my son can pick-up some words from the 2nd week. Let's see.

其實坊間早已流傳了整套中華字經, 包繁/簡體, 且加上拼音....

You mean via online search or can it be purchased elsewhere? I know of the 簡體 & pinyin version but have not heard of the 繁體 version. Please pm me.

其實在Microsoft Word入面有一個function可以將簡體全部轉成繁體, 或將繁體轉成簡體.  做法是在pull down manual 上面 click "Tool", 跟著click "Language", 然後再click "Chinese Translation", 妳想點轉都得!

我唔敢周團傳整套<中華字經>呀, 我怕俾人告   不過我相信很快就有很多人知, 最少報了名的人會有啦!

Do you know how to use it [中華字經]? Is it like the Doman's method; show the words to our kids three times a day?

Please advise.

我很少用字咭教女兒認字，太悶了！我只有經驗教女兒認英文字，教中文方法有出入，我正在想一些較有趣的方法教字經。你有建議嗎？

我沒野心教她整套字經，我只想她懂得自已看中文書，暑假只有三星期，扣取外遊只剩二星期，能學到200個字我都開心死了。

Hi twokidsmum,

I just read aloud with my son and explained to him the meanings of the words.  My son didn't reject but I am not sure whether he can memorize the words later.

盡力而為囉! 我最終不是要求他們背誦/完全理解字經全文, 而是希望他們懂得自行閱讀圖書.

你懂得解釋內容給你兒子聽, 真厲害啊!

請多多指教.

I have started teaching my girls at home and there are 3 part to this. Learn by sound, sight and finally understanding.

By sound: Let the child memorize the lines, around 12 lines per day, more if the child is older than 5. Ask the child to point at the words while they are reciting.

By sight: mix up the word cards (4 - 8 words) and ask the child to arrange them in the right order.

By understanding: explain to the child the meaning of the words and ask him/her to read out the words.

This method works well with my 3 & 1/2 yrs old. As for my 6 & 1/2 yrs old, since she already knows a lot of Chinese characters, she is progressing much faster.
