Dear
I agree with your idea. Before my son was 2 years old, I simply speak to him in Cantonese. Since his daily environment is mainly Cantonese speaking, it gives him confidence of using the language to express himself and to explore the world.
Only after 2 and half years old when he managed to speak in complete sesntences, i taught him simple single English words, just to give him a taste of a different language.
After 3 years old, i occasionally speak to him fully in English. Now he's 3 years and 3 months, he manages to listen to some instructions. Half knowing and half guessing, he understands some story content in English.
At this moment, perhaps he can't speak well like those who use to have a domestic helper, but i am quite satisfied with his progress.
For Mandarin, i will let him learn after he has built up a more concrete Chinese word bank. I believe that it would not be difficult for him to learn Mandarin in later stages if he has a good foundation in Chinese.
If my child is not a language genius, I'd better use the resources for his personal development rather than spending on learning several languages which he has no chance to use in daily life. |
