Re: Useful websites for gifted

For the really really gifted ones, try the Education Program for Gifted Youth by Stanford University.  It offers distance learning courses for children who are so advance that schools cannot offer them anything more.

I don't want to comment on their math/science courses because I am not an expert in those fields.  However, their English course is highly structured, btw.  Students need to summit writing samples before they're allowed to enroll there.  If you're accepted, you get a much higher chance of getting into great universities like Harvard.....Certainly, the tuition of this program would be quite expensive.  Yet it's indeed very good.

Re: Useful websites for gifted

Hi CherylMum:
The earliest English course starts from age 9, so I guess it may not be only for high school students.

I appreciated this program for a few reasons:

1) After gifted children finished those courses, they can go off to things that they really enjoy instead. Things like novel writing, training for math Olympiad is highly time consuming.  These courses would be a time saver for many kids.

2) No matter how gifted a child is ,he/she still needs daily learning.  I guess having daily exercises does not mean it's going to be boring.  As long as the courses are flexible enough to fit the child developments, it's certainly fine.  Even gifted pianists have to practice every day, right? It's how and what they practice, not how frequently they practice, that really matter.

BTW, it's indeed a myth that gifted children don't like daily exercises.  Gifted children love to be challenged, and their happiest moments of learning are the times when their eyes sparkle or when they utter "ahhhhhh!"  I am hoping that these courses are not just more difficult/advanced.   They are known to be profound.  You may be right in saying that they're still not highly creative, yet analytical thinking skill would be something that they'd never lack.

I am indeed thinking that the program is more suitable for future professors than to future artists, though.  Your girl is more to the artist type, right?

Re: Useful websites for gifted

Dear CherylMum:

I hope to know more about the program, too! I'm indeed thinking about enrolling one of my students in its program. If I succeed, I'll certainly tell you more about their teaching methods!

Your girl seems to be doing very fine! She even loves to play the piano on her own now!
Isn't it wonderful to see her development?
