Read, read, read and write, write, write.  You'll be surprised how much they learnt while they are into reading.

For Item No. 5, I think you may ask your kid to write story board first.  Every time my son finishes a story, he needs to write comments (this is the school homework).  When he has time, I ask him to re-write the story in own words, that can be divided into a few sections.  It helps improving the comprehension and writing as well.

This method had been used by me when I was still a primary student.  I wrote down difficult words in a small book.  I tried to use them in my writing exercise, however I could never use them in a precise way.  Also, since they are difficult words, that means most of them are not frequently used words.  At this age, I think whether a passage is well written or not does not depends on how many difficult words you have used.  Instead, it depends on how precisely you use different words.

I think, for every kid, they should learn the most frequently used words first.  The next step is to learn how they should be used in different context.  In this aspect, I recommend Lady Birds Key Words series.  After reading them, you kid will learn the use of the most frequently used words in different context.  One problem is that these books were written years ago, i.e. they are quite boring for older kids.  My son finishes 10 books but is not willing to read the remaining 2.

對 la,我就用緊呢個方法,簡單字但多用途,連 Grammar 都學到。

遲 d 就學下寫 comments,重寫故事,真係多謝個位教我的家長。

Dear cherubic,

I'm very interest about your recommendation "Lady Birds Key Words series", suitable for which level kids?  My daughter is P.1, she able to read the simple chapter book by her own (eg. Magic tree house, Rainbow magic), is it suitable for her?  Is it easy to find it from HK book shop?

Thanks a lot!
MayAh

If your daugher can read Magic Tree House by her own, Lady Bird Key Word series may be too easy for her.  However, you may take a look at bookstore, they are available in major book stores, e.g. dymock, joint publishing, HK Book Centre, etc.  About $30 each.  I suggest you to try levels 9b or above.
