Whose football is this?的答案係It is Tom's football.而唔係This is Tom's football.

Whose caps are these?的答案係They are Peter's caps.而唔係

This / that ， These / those 是和距離有關的。This / that are for singular, these / those are for plural.

'Whose football is this?' 首先已identify問題指的object (football), 同時提出問題的人和這個object是較為接近的， 答題時候，如答題的人離football有一d距離, 要用 'That's Tom's football.', 如距離物件不遠, 而大家已明顯知道主題是 '這個football', 答題是要用 'It's Tom's football.' 才對的.
(plural 'whose these books?  They're Tom's books).

We use this/these for people and things which are close to the speaker.

We use that/those for people and things which are more distant from the speaker, or not present.

當問題已用'this' or 'that' (試乎與物件距離)確定所指的物件, 如 '請問這足球是誰人的?'
英文回答的時候不用累贅 '這足球是Thomas的.'
故只需簡化為 '是Thomas的.' 便可. = 'it's Thomas'football.'
