My kid is at P.2.  He can write up to 200 words.  It's not because he's very talented.  It's just because I ask him to write every day.  Then he write better and better and write more words

我仔寫多隻字都叫死,但佢次次都一定寫多過題目要求1-2句咁大把啦.

(我間學校平時都係叫作8-9句咋)

其實作文都唔一定要長先叫好, 老師都唔會主張寫得太多, 如要求是60字, 你未寫多20字左右. 只要可以寫出老師要求就可以, 因老師講, 你越寫得多, 就會比老師扣分o既機會越大.. 所以都係要岩題最重要

係呀.  P5/P6大概180字左右.  有+/- 10% allowance. 太多(唔一針見血/ 言之無物)或太少都扣分.

Thanks Precioustone and Martie for your kind words.  I asked my kid to write.  At the very first beginning, he could only write a few words.  I don't really correct his grammer.  In fact, I am not particularly good in English.  I dare not to correct him.  I just encouraged him to write.  It's not an issue at all if he wrote Chinese English at the beginning or off track.  At least he tried.  Plus reading and as time goes on, he improved.  And now, he has no problem at all to write 60-70 words at one go.  Then he usually plays for a while and then gets back to his desk to continue writing.  I encourage him to write, hopefully one essay every day.   But will stop during exams.

@Martie, yes, I also come across a case a P.6 students writes a lot and write very good.

如果是平時自己作黎玩下，我覺得無必要去限住字數，但有一句說話係習以為常，不明點解成日覺得字數多就是好，內容空泛無用

再講，到中學，考作文，年地要你作180字，你寫到200幾係會扣分，習慣長篇大論的，到時不知可吾可以收放自如呢

我問過囡囡,有2情況, 有長有短, 如長文要求起碼300字, 組長要求更高, 當然唔係長篇大論就可以, 亦要有組織, 有文法, 有詞彙數量, 內容情境等等要求......, 每項都計分; 短文就要精間, 有時要求30字, 有時100字, 內容要精間, 只可重點, 所謂"言簡意賅"。

字數只是其中一個指標，仔仔在國際學校唸書，對於英文寫作要求較高，字數不是concern，留心的是文體、用字和想像力／理據鋪排。
學校會由recount, journal, procedural writing, poem, narrative, information report, argumentative 等逐步逐年教授，每種文體有不同要求，小朋友要慢慢學習。
有些小朋友讀書叻，不等於文章就會寫得好，寫作講求養份（生活體驗、閱歷）和文釆，與成績無關。

學校真係有唔主張作太長, 噉當然有最少字數.
我地學校就無話作多要扣分, 但我知有o的學校真係會.
