Re: 數學學習顧問
The teacher who said the second method is correct probably was following the model answer rigidly.
Normally, If my students write either answer, I will accept it without second thoughts. But strictly speaking, the first method is the correct one. We have to know multiplication comes from adding the same number many times. If we buy 10 organges, we can know the answer by adding up $3 10 times,i.e. $3+$3+...+$3. To save the troube of adding up, we multiply $3 by 10. Similarly, for two oranges, it should be $3x2.
The simple way to remember this is look at the units in the answer, if we need to answer in $, the $ should be written first rule. This golden rule is very important when we come to division.
I am not defending Pollycheng (I don't know her) but as a private tutor myself, I do not believe university students are better. On average, they are definitely cheaper but normally they are ill prepared for their classes and they are not committed to the job. To them giving private tutorial lessons is just a way to earn some pocket money.
The best tutors are the committed parents themselves at primiary school level. A good tutor is difficult to come by and normally too expensive to be afforded by most parents. This is because primary students normally lack the self discipline or capbability to study on their own, close monitoring is required. To expect a primary student to improve his/her academic peroformance with just a couple of hours of private tutoring a week is unrealistic , unless this is coupled with parents' involvement. |
