11 歲去英國, prep or senior school ?

Hi,

I have following questions about studying in England and I hope those who have rich experience can help me, thank you.

1. My son is 10 years old. He will go to England to study at year 7 next year, the agent advised me to choose a prep school for him and she said that prep school can train my child for two years and then recommend him to a good senior to start year 9, is it true? But I think my son is an introvert child and he makes friends easily. I think that It should be OK for him to study in a senior school rather than a prep school. My son ranks 7th of a total of 37 and studying in a good primary school in Yau Tsim Mong District.

2. Under such circumstances, whcih kinds of school I should choose (prep or senior), is it trroublesome for my son to start a new school life in another school when he is at year 9 ?

3. Good senior schools will receive good child from prep school or just take those from relation- connected prep school?

4. The agent said that she had submitted the application with my son's academic reports to my favoruite schools in England last week? But I am afraid that she DID NOT EVER SUBMIT any application for my son becasue she had strongly recommended a prep school (Millfield Prep School) to me. Any school recommendation?Prep or senior schools?

5. Any recommedation to what I should do?

Millfield Prep School是不是http://www.millfieldschool.com/index.htm的prep school ?Millfield school 是全英第二大的寄宿學校(指學生人數)。但比起全英150名以內的中學，歷史不算久(只有70年歷史)。很多英國出名的中學都會有幾百年的歷史。當然，歷史悠久不等於好。但 Millfield school 的收費比得上頂級名校如Charter House , Eton & Harrow。但GCSE 和A-LEAVE成績郤一般。我認為不值。

英國都有很多出名的中學，收費比 Millfield school 平，亦是由YR7起收生的。

家長一定要自己做Research，找到心儀的中學，再自己或經可靠的agent報名。有很多agent，因為佣金的問題﹐要家長報較差的學校。

我不知道你想報男校或男女校。但你可要求agent 給你一份英國150名以內的中學排名表，然後按自己的心水，報大約3-5間。

好的senior school 都不一定要在英國先讀pre school才考到。而且很多好的senior school ，如TONBRIDGE等，早3年就要報名。我不同意你agnet 的意見。

你亦應到British Council 的教育展參考。不要盡信agent 。

Thank you very much for your advice.  I have been putting so much efforts to identify the schools like lougborough, its fee is low, high rank and less HK pupils etc and any other.  But it is very hard to enroll.  Do you have any agent reliable ?, please PM me, thanks.  I prefer boys school but my half prefers co-ed.

My friend's son study at Bishops Stortford College before , he said the school is good and they also have Junior and Senior School, resaonable school fee, school ranking  and not far from London. You can make consideration of this school.

其實各有好處, 大多數純小學 (可讀到中二), 完成後,由於該所學校沒有直升小學關係,好多時都會盡力幫學生升學, 而由於海外生家長多數貪方便, 所以比較少選擇讀純小學, 所以呢D學校通常香港學生會較少, 另外, 如果有D學生本身係讀開中文小學,考一D TOP GRADE學校既機會相對難, 但如果家長目標真係呢D TOP GRADE中學, 咁讀呢D純小學先作為踏腳石亦無不可, 因為呢D純小收生通常無咁難, 但你申請時最好同AGENT講明你既目標.

至於直升中學, 最大既好處當然係無後顧之憂啦, 基本上佢哋真係直升既, 但有番咁上下既學校又通常難考D, 學生要真係有咁上下能力至收呀.

關於MILLFIELD PREP, 佢 唔算係一間純小,因為佢有直升中學, 所以佢唔會預你轉校. 成續亦只屬中上, 但學校設施就真係好好, 所以要睇你要D咩,

其實除咗BISHOP 外, 仲有好多好學校,學費唔係咗貴但 成績都好好既, 如:
Loughborough Grammar (BOY)
Talbot Heath (Girls)
Royal High (Girls)
Ipswich (Co Edu)
Monmouth (Boys)
等, 但呢D收既學生真係要有番咁上下成績

其實以你個申請, YR 7, 應該好多選擇, 所以唔使太擔心呀

I don't understand why so many of you apply through the agent!  It's a complete waste of time and $$$!

Why don't you do the research yourself, e.g. visit website / contact the schools directly for further information and ask about the application procedure?!!!  

My dad did all that by himself back in 1988 and got both my brother and I into boarding schools!!  I still remember I had entrance exam in my school in HK.  My school in the UK actually sent the entrance exam papers to my school in HK!!!!

我經嗰間agent冇收我錢, 仲好helpful tim!
