It depends on the children's character. My children are quite Okay in Kumon Chinese. They can speak mandarin fluently and ok in reading Chinese.

My girl is now in P5 in an ESF school and she has been learning Kumon Chinese for around two years. The course materials are compiled with efforts and I would continue to send my girl there. The amount of homework and the pace of learning are negotiable, which is the flexibility promoted by Kumon. Recently I know that they have materials in simplified Chinese characters, which is more convienent for ESF kids as they are also learning simplified characters at school. There is a tuition centre opposite to Science Museum called "陸陳" which is also popular among kids in international schools in learning Chinese.

My boy (5 years old) has studies Kumon Chinese since October.  He needs to listen CD and read it out everyday, e.g. 馬在跑, 豬很胖, 兔子穿襪子, xx 穿褲子, 媽媽在洗筷子/盤子.....only few pages everyday and without writing at this moment.  Besides, he has to recite a poem once a week,
e.g. 搖啊搖,搖啊搖,船兒搖到外婆橋。
外婆好,外婆好,外婆對我嘻嘻笑。
搖啊搖,搖啊搖,船兒搖到外婆橋。
外婆說,好寶寶,外婆給你一塊糕。


This only occupied him 10 minutes a day approximately.  However, the homework will be increased gradually. If he can recognize and read them out to his teacher, he can move to the next level.  If he can't, teacher will give him the same stuff again until he can do it.

Every children have different characters.  I think it depends on your child.  I've known a boy, he studies year 3 in IS.  He takes Chinese, English & Maths.  He'd use almost 2 hours to finish 3 subjects everyday after school.   May be you would say "What a silly!!"  However, he loves to do so and he really enjoys it.

Nice to hear you again.  What do you think about Kumon Chi?   Is it similar to Kumon Eng?  Except Kumon Chi, how can we improve Chi (study in IS)?  Many thanks for your nice sharing.

In another topic, you mentioned your son can speak fluent Cantonese and good Mandarin. How about reading/writing, he learn them in Cantonese or Mandarin. Pls share.

We plan to put our 2.5-yr-old girl to IS, we can speak Cantonese and English but not Mandarin, if we want her to learn Mandarin in the future, it relies only on few hours Mandarin classes per week? I know the best way to learn a language is we can speak it at home and improve thru reading books, but we don't have this language environment at home, I can't read a story to her in Mandarin.  Pls advise.

I absolutely agree that Kumon is the most boring class I ever heard.  Homework of Kumon Maths has 150 questions a daily……

However, learning Chinese & English are quite..........I can only say difference.  For English, you can learn phonics to blend vocab.  Basically, my boy can be able to write 26 letters so that he can make sentences now, although some spellings are wrong.  

For Chinese (characters recognition), I think that it doesn't have any short cut to learn every single character, only copywriting and read it out repeatedly.  Although Kumon is boring, how can a child have fun for Chinese copywriting?  Even his Chinese homework from school also has copywriting 2 / 3 times a week.

However, I don't think Kumon can train him up be a fluency Mandarin speaker.  But I hope he could write an article just like a local primary student can do.   I'm not sure I've made a right decision.  Just have a try !!!  Never try, never know.
