disppointed by YC
My son has been studying in YC since 2 years old. I chose Yew Chung for my son because I want him to be able to communicate in Chinese (spoken and written) when he grows up. Just in case he cannot find work in HK, he has a choice of going to China to work in the future. I have no worry about his English, since he is a bookworm, and he is learning a lot of English from his books and English speaking friends.
Anyway, I am writing here because I feel so disappointed by something that happened this week. My son’s class is going for a day trip this Thursday (today). I know about the trip since a few weeks ago, by checking the online school calendar, which is updated every now and then. But the school did not send any notice about it until last Thursday (i.e., one week’s notice), and asked for parents to help at the trip. I signed the reply slip immediately (after begging my boss to let me have a half day off at one week’s notice) and ask my son to return it to the class teacher the next day (Friday).
Strangely, my son brought back two more notices (with exactly the same content) from school on Monday. He said one was from class teacher, and one was from Chinese teacher. That made three notices for the same event. Thinking that they did not receive the first reply, I signed another reply slip, and asked my son to bring it back again.
On Tuesday, my son came home with a paper about what to wear and what to bring for the trip on Thursday. There is no reply about whether they accepted my offer to help, or where/ when to go for the parents who got accepted for helping at the trip. So, I called the school office on Wednesday, am and pm, to find out what is really happening. The class teacher never returned my call.
After I came home after work last night, I found a notice in my son’s school bag that said, ‘Thank you very much for you offer to support this trip. We are only able to take three helpers on the bus and so we had to take the first three replies. We will have trips later in the school year and would appreciate your help at a later date.’
So I have taken the ‘urgent leave’ for nothing! Now my son is off to the trip without me, and he looked so disappointed when I see him off to the school bus this morning. And because they refused me at such late notice, I could not even make any other plans for today.
I am not happy about this because I have expectations for this school. During his kindergarten days, and earlier primary school. The notice about a trip will come about two to three weeks before it, and the working parents can plan according to our schedule.
Not to say about the way of choosing which parent to help. ‘First three replies’? Does that mean my son have to run to the teacher and hand in the reply first thing in the morning in order to earn a place? It would be more fair if they say they choose by drawing lots. Anyway, I wouldn’t know even if they just choose whoever they like.
Second point is, why did they limit the number of parents by the available seats on the bus? In year one, I have joined a trip that asked the parents to wait at the site (not a remote site at the New Territories). Then, more parents can join, and the number of student to adult ratio will be smaller and thus more safe for our kids. I sure would not mind going there to wait for them. Seriously, I even considered going there today and meet them there. But I don’t want to seem like working against the school. So instead, I am sitting at home, feeling angry and typing this.
After this long account of why I am so disappointed with the school, the main point I want to say is: This school is not as parent-oriented as other IS, and there is no ‘parent-teacher association’ to express your views. Anyway, I will still let my son study here because I want to make sure his Chinese is OK. |
