HKU? Sorry folks. Not according to Times Higher Education published in March 2015 in its top university reputation ranking table.
Top academics were asked to nominate what they viewed as the best university around the world in teaching and research. There are inevitably many subjective elements, especially when we are talking about "reputation".
The top five come as no surprise:
1. Harvard
2. Cambridge
3. Oxford
4. MIT
5. Stanford
To answer the above question: Tsinghua is ranked highest at 26, followed by Peking at 32. HKU is the lowest at 57.
For comparison, Tokyo is 12, Toronto 16, Singapore 24, Kyoto 27, McGill 35, UBC 37, Melbourne 41, Sydney 52, Seoul 56, Taiwan 64.
HKU (57) has the best reputation locally. HKUST is ranked at 75. No more local university within the top 100 list.
So when you hear a student giving up a HKU offer for Tsinghua or Peking U, you can say you know why.
