The standard of Year 5 Chinese in Singapore ?

What will be the standard of Chinese around for a Year 5 student in Singapore ? The student is using a Year 5 Chinese Textbook from a Singapore publisher. Any idea ?  Will it be same standard in Hong Kong local school ?

Hi Ivymom,

Not that I know much about education in Singapore. But since no one answers you, I did some research for you on the web. The below info from the Ministry of Education in Singapore should give you an idea on Grade 5 Chinese curriculum.

a) The primary school Chinese syllabus as of 2007 .

b) Vocabulary list for Grade 5 students.
-Standard stream. http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/syllabuses/mother-tongue-languages/files/character-list-primary-chinese-2007.pdf
-Advanced stream
http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/syllabuses/mother-tongue-languages/files/character-list-primary-higher-chinese-2007.pdf

Then you may make a decision to map to grade level equivalent in HK. Hope it helps.

Heard from a SIS parent b4, 約低過local school一年左右,esp. written Chinese.
I've no personal experience.

my wife come from SIN,
so I have all the primary school english, maths, chinese  exam paper.

Hong Kong standard is super low. my friend's daughter Form 3, don't know the vocab in primary 4 exam paper loh.

So how ?

The best  is to compare the syllabus of the two places. Then, go to a book shop in HK and look for some Grade 5 Chinese supplementary exercises to compare with the Singapore Chinese exam papers that you have. That would give you a better comparison. Your friend's daughter is just one person. She may not be a good comparison to your wife. e.g. one in Band One, the other in Band Five; One likes to read books after school and the other won't. One is smart and the other is an average Joe...etc

The Chinese standard of Singapore students is lower than that of HK students of the same grade.  I guess the difference is about 1 year in primary schol and 2 years in secondary school.  Bear in mind that Chinese is almost a second language to Chinese Singaporeans.   However, most Chinese Singaporens can speak fluent Putonghua.

对，不只是SIS的学生，凡是香港IS的学生，普通话口语都不错，但是中国语文的能力就比较弱，这才是需要关注的。

That's exactly what my friend who is a  SIS parent told me. His son speaks fluent PTH. He can read both traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese,but written Chinese is not strong.
