Over 70pc of applicants to international schools in HK waited < 6 months??

An article in SCMP today quotes "More than 70 per cent of applicants to international schools have  waited less than six months before being admitted" from the Thematic Household Survey Report No. 49 of the Census and Statistics Department.  My family is unfortunately in the 30 per cent population.  I also heard that some expat could hardly find international school places for their kids.

The survey report also says "For those 21 700 persons studying in international primary schools at the time of enumeration, about one-quarter (25.1%) had plan to further study in international secondary schools in Hong Kong. Some 10.6% did not have such plan and another 64.3% had no decision yet".  Well, I think the great majority of kids in international primary schools will continue their education in international secondary school.  It is very difficult for international primary students to change to local secondary school.

As I had expressed earlier in another post, due to historical reasons, there are at least 1 million Hongkongers who have foreign citizenship, out of a total population of 7 million. Many of these foreign Hongkongers would like to send their kids to international schools, as well as some local Hongkongers who have no confidence in the local education system and would like to do the same.

So unless 1 in every 7 schools in Hongkong is an international school, there simply won't be enough places to go round. Currently there are around 1100 schools in Hongkong, out of which 50 are international schools, when there should be at least 150 of them (1/7 of 1100).

Of course, the figure of 1 million Hongkongers with foreign citizenship is only a personal guess, but I doubt if that would be far from the actual figure.
