Students at German Swiss International School!

Hi everyone,

I have just received a very kind offer from German Swiss International School for year 12. Although I am extremely grateful and happy about this, I would like to know whether the students at GSIS are kind and nice, or are arrogant and mean, so that I could do some sorts of preparation before I join the school in August this year. Thank you so much!


Also, I would like to thank all the 'mummies', as well as 'daddies'(if any) who helped and provided valuable opinions to me earlier, as they really made me feel confident and hopeful. Thank you!!!

I like your answer saying you don't really know.  A school is like a mini society.  You are bound to meet some arrogant and nasty students.  On the other hand, there are always others who are nice and helpful.  Just choose your friends carefully and you will be fine.

wow congratz!

GSIS kids are usually really friendly :) You got into the international section, right? I know some people from the German section and they are like the nicest people I've ever known. I'm doing something with GSIS people from international section these months and I have to say that a number of them are not as nice, or more like mean actually...but I can assure that they're just the minority.

Don't worry and enjoy your school life next year! :)

I am just curious.  Why do you decide you want to transfer to GSIS at Grade 12?  Final year of high school.  Did you study at traditional local school, or you have been with another international school all along?

Sure to go if u are looking for academic results.  
I do know friend rejecting offer from GSIC for their child.  Social class consideration.

Social class consideration?  You mean this "social class issue" had never ocurred to your friend before his kid made the application?   Or do you mean your friend's social class moved up or down after his kid's application?   It is kind of sad if he rejected the offer solely for this reason because every school has kids from rich families, poor families as well as middle class families.  I understand that there are students in GSIS receiving scholarship for tuition fees and one of the criteria is that they are in need of finanical assistance.  So not everybody is rich or even well off there.  I am sure this holds truth with other IS such as ESF etc.

I think they considered it in more depth after being offered a place.  Personally  I think its a waste of golden chance to be able to study in GSIS.  However, I am not parent of their child.  It's great that GSIS offer "scholarship for tuition fees and one of the criteria is that they are in need of financial assistance".  In ESF, they do have that assistance and they won't tell who is receiving it.  Did anyone notice that some Direct Subsidiary Schools do have that kind of scholarship but few people applied for it.  Those who need it don't even has a chance to get in. (I read it from recent newspaper)

In fact, before I applied to GSIS, I went on the website of China Service Mall and appraently GSIS is only the 9th best international school in Hong Kong... But then I have also heard people say that GSIS is like the best international school

Not quite sure to believe in which claim... But I think the kids at GSIS, al least most of them, should be quite wealthy because when I went to the school last time, I saw quite a lot of Benz, or other expensive cars outside the school...

You see, this is why my parents (and I as well) are quite concerned about general attitude of the pupils at GSIS... I mean, if they are wealthy, there might be some relatively pompous pupils...

Oh... Does anyone here know the approximate percentage of Chinese students at GSIS in year 12? I mean, can the Chinese and Hong Kong students mix well with the foreign pupils? In my school, the mainland students seem to stay togerther... there is a kind of separation between the foreign students and the Chinese... No, even amongst the foreign students there are groups of German, English and French pupils that are separated from each other as well...

Is this the same at GSIS?

I guess you are talking about this list.  http://www.at0086.com/rank/en-us/20080129210013968.html  Anyway, I understand you have applied to more than one school.  What you really need to do is to find out more information about each of the schools you have applied to and see which one would suit you best.

If you are worried that the GSIS kids come from rich families, wait until you see the ones at CIS.  I am sure there are CIS parents owning private jets.  It's just that you won't see their planes waiting outside school. :D   Having said that, I am sure there are also some CIS kids coming from middle class or not so well-off families   The truth is that a lot of the GSIS parents are expatriates working in large corporations.  You may say they are well off and that's all.  I have the feeling that you are overly concerned with this "rich family" issue.  This may not do you any good.  If you hold this belief that the GSIS kids are pompous, then you will put up a guard around you without you knowing about it.  But people around you will feel it and they will shun you.  My advice to you is this - be friendly and be yourself.  Try to look deeper into people and don't judge anybody by their wealth or family background.  

Assuming you are going to the International stream, there will probably be around 50 to 60 people in Year 12.  A lot of them have parents of different nationalities so one can't really tell the ratio of Chinese to foreign students.  It is a relatively small school, so people are comparatively close to each other.  Ultimately, whether you can mix well with others would in fact depend a lot on your own attitude.  It's your attitude and personality count more than anything else.

By the way, I heard that a student who received scholarship at GSIS got into Oxbridge not long ago.  People admired him more because he was in need of financial assistance (hence the scholarship) in order to continue with his education in GSIS.  Kids who have benz waiting for them outside school might not gain as many clapping of hands.  Your target should be to try your best and realise your full potential.  He can realise his dream, so can you.
