HOW CAN WE SAVE ON TEXTBOOKS & EXERCISES

The cost of textbooks and readers is getting higher and higher each year (E.g. $81 for a music textbook).  Some items are not necessary to purchase.  How can we reflect our concern to the school and affect the choice of textbooks?  I hope the teachers can design some notes and studying materials for some subjects like music, Mandarin and Computing.

我都唔明點解可以年年加，我哋人工只有減薪同湅薪，但啲書價仲升得快過我啲血壓，計落一個小朋友要成2,xxx，我兩個加埋成$5000....想死>-<

KTS doesn't give us a choice.  We either buy the whole set through the school or we buy everything ourselves.  Why can't we choose not to buy certain items?  I hate to buy those CDs as my daughter never use them.  She chucked them into the drawer straight after they were given by the teacher.

我想學校有時只是想容易D處理, 不會那麼亂, 有時又想著幫繁忙嘅家長, 集體代購, 以取優惠, 不是故意的, 但有時針實在沒有兩頭利, 大家現在亦想著環保, 所以我想唯有將沒用的轉送他人, 又或也可向校反映, 以求取得平衡吧, 相信學校也會接受的.

Tha't why I never order the books via school and order it direct from bookstore by myself.

Oh.  Was it very troublesome to buy from bookstore?  The store doesn't usually have ALL the books and exercises at once.

My girl will be P1 this coming Sept. I want to know is some books or items are no need at school? If so, then I will buy later to see whether my girl really need or not.

if 'need' means whether
1 it WILL be asked to bring to school; or
2 it WILL be based upon when doing assignment or being tested;

then CDs MAY not be needed (if the kids don't need them for learning mandarin pronounication, etc. but bear in mind Chinese dictations are in mandarin). some storybooks MAY not be needed (i've forgotten which ones, as there're a no. of storybooks on the book list), but each yr the 'need' may be a bit different.

let me add a word, CDs MAY be useful for some kids/parents.

and after late Aug or Sept, some items (in particualr unpopular ones) may be relatively difficult to be found in bookstores, as textbook stores may not refill their stocks

I place order at 天利行 and they will call me if the books are available.  It's ok for me as my house is just 5 min walk to this book store.  However, I couldn't order 1 reading book called "三國演義 (導讀版)" this year.  

Of course, it should be more convenient to order all the books at school but I don't want to order all the reading books if I can reserve it from library.

That's why I said the CDs are no use FOR ME (ONLY).  My girl doesn't 'need' it for dictation.  If I was given the chance to choose, I'll not buy -- and save a couple of hundred dollars.

If you don't feel trouble, you may borrow the story books/readers from public library.  You need to search it from the library's website to ensure that the books are available and reserve them from the website with HK$2.50.

I normally reserve the books two times -1st: during summer/easter holiday for 1st reading and 2nd: reading/quiz request by class teacher

P.s. I take only 10 min walk to the public library from my house.

Why I cannot find the story books in the book list? For P1 English book, it just request to buy Longman Welcome to English. Then which one is the story books?

Does it mean no need to bring back the CD to school? In my mind, if no need to bring back school, I will consider buy or not because maybe I will choose others for my child as reference books.

You should received 3 pages of booklists, one for 1st term, the second should be for 2nd term and the third should be the supplementary & story books etc.  May be you go to P.1 forum and check this with other mami.

Yes, they are not required to bring CD school.

準小一既家長現時必有reader既booklist，因為舊年我都係開咗學大約9月中學校先派個booklist比我哋架..

我個女間學校响買書呢方面安排得比較好，佢哋會响家長日果日請書局派人都學校擺檔，家長無論係買全套定部份書都可以响果日買埋，我諗都可以向學校反映吓，睇吓佢哋安唔安排到…

Well, we have to juggle with the money when we have two kids to feed.  Very expensive!  Like the "Welcome" slogan -- 'save every single dollar' ma.

We should organise this say sometime around May (b4 the school ask us to pay for the next year books) in order to save money.....oh what if the school change the readers?  We need to check the booklist 1st.
