Premises allocated for int'l schools
April 11, 2013
Three vacant school premises in Stanley, Shau Kei Wan and Lam Tin have been successfully allocated to three operators for developing international schools, Secretary for Education Eddie Ng announced today.
The Government supports the development of a vibrant international school sector in Hong Kong, he said, to meet demand for school places from overseas families living in Hong Kong and those coming to Hong Kong for work or investing.
"The allocation exercise is part of our continuous effort to increase the provision in the international school sector. I am encouraged by the keen interest to expand or set up international schools in Hong Kong. The additional places to be provided will help address the needs of the international community in Hong Kong."
Applications from 34 organisations were received by the deadline.
The site at Ma Hang Estate Phase III in Stanley has been allocated to the International Montessori Education Foundation, and the site at 460 Shau Kei Wan Road has been allocated to Carmel School Association. The site at 11 On Tin Street in Lam Tin has been allocated to NAE Hong Kong.
Based on initial successful applicants’ plans, 1,700 school places will be provided on a progressive basis from 2013-14. Of these, 1,150 primary places and 210 secondary places will be provided by the 2016-17 school year.
International schools in Hong Kong offer about 38,700 school places for the 2012-13 school year. Four vacant school premises were put forward for the allocation after considering responses to the expressions of interest exercise launched last June.
The bureau’s School Allocation Committee is now considering the allocation of the remaining premises at Ping Shek Estate, Kwun Tong, and will announce the result once a suitable school operator is identified.
