If you give up FIS what are your other options? FIS is a lovely small school with pretty good IB score. Does your family able to comprehend French? That might help with the child's adaptation to the school.
Note though, some (not all) French families may not embrace oriental classmates on the same level as other French kids, to put it lightly. On his way to school my son often meet a cute French girl who goes to the French preschool next to his kindergarten. They became great friends very soon. According to the helper who usually take the girl to school, her elder sister goes to FIS and the little one will join the school when she is old enough. Last week as a rare treat the little girl's mother took her to school, and according to my helper she is not very happy with my son playing with her daughter. Although my son is a native English speaker, he is 100% ethnic Chinese, and I suspect that was the reason for her coldness. If I were around perhaps it would be better as I can converse a bit in French, anyhow it's just a Parisienne trait as my other Province French friend can confirm. Just note that French snobbishness is not a myth.
Again though, FIS is a great school and congratulations for getting in. As the French community gets stronger each day in HK it would become harder and harder to get into FIS. You can always go around travel issues (hire a driver, car pool, or even move), but a good school is hard to come by. Again, it also depends on what school options you have in your hand as well. |
