IB 課程一定要用 MAC 嗎?

小兒張升讀IB課程，學校話要用MAC ，但孩子和我都希望用Windows/Linux. 已問過下學校， 暫時學校都講吾出有d乜野一定要用mac os。 想問下各位讀僅IB 課程 的家長,有冇見過孩子們用過一些一定要用mac os 的 application.

又唔一定是行lB才用，ESF初中行GCSE都用mac機。有時我女兒copy 文件俾我，我用window 就看不到，不過我唔熟電腦唔知點解

學校的課程用了Mac的軟件、format, 咁咪要用Mac囉。

我估係間公司做marketing 做得好，吾只Esf，知道吾少IS都係用mac機的。

我諗唔關 IB 課程事，我仔學校 Y7 規定買 Windows，但之後如果要換機就隨學生意願，我見好多繼續用 windows，亦有相當一部分換 mac，所以邊個 OS 應該冇影響

其實這個問題應該問學校；ib課程與mac 無必然關係，不過卻與學校有關。

Thanks. I am just hoping to avoid buying Macbook. My kid use Linux/Windows dual boot.

I do not think primary or secondary students would be using anything fancy.
Mac has a similar package of software like MS Office.  It is called iWork. Basically similar functions as MS Office: word processing (Word vs Pages), spreadsheet (Excel vs Numbers) and slideshow (Powerpoint vs Keynotes).
One good thing about iWork is that, it opens all MS Office documents with no problems. And it can also save (convert) all documents in a  format for use on a Windows computer. Looks like Windows computer do not have this flexibility.

Ask her to save the document as a MS Word format.

Computers are just a tool, the students should not have a preference if the school has a rule. There are so many more important things to worry about.

My son's school provided them with a Mac book during secondary school. My hubby has switched to use Mac several months ago. Both of them don't want to switch back to windows after using Mac. They say Mac is so powerful & user friendly.
Another point: the homework is usually submitted online, teachers' notes shared online. I am no computer expert. But is there any problem if your son is using a different platform?

Not sure what your concerns are with Mac.
Mac computers are super easy to use, maintain and administer. Mac computers are also more secure and less prone to virus attack. It is easier for schools to maintain and monitor their network if students use Mac.
For young students, there is no need to have dual boot. Why make things complicated when Mac OS can handle literally most tasks?
Someone mentioned Bootcamp. Well, that was a feature introduced to Mac in the past when many software still did not have a Mac version. Now, most popular software can run on Mac computers.

Also, obviously our poster's son is not a computer illiterate. Or else kids-kingdom wont mention "My kid use Linux/Windows dual boot".

學校選定用咩OS電腦；同課程無關；有學校用Mac亦有學校用Windows。是學校決定。
有d學校只用Mac機；有d學校用PC；要年年投標；每年由唔同型號/牌子中標。
經學校統一買機包校內維修；壞機有spare機借比你上堂；方便管理。
否則同一班學生幾十部唔同model淨係解決電腦問題已經唔使上堂or堂堂都係ICT淨係解決電腦問題...
打個比喻；學校指定用A出版社本science book；你都唔會要學校解釋點解用A唔用B；我個女用開B；我可唔可以用B；有咩內容A出版社有B出版社冇?

My situation is different, we have to buy our own computer. And obviously, maintenance and support is our responsibility. So the key point is whether windows computer can run the required applications.

Lets put it this way.

If the whole school population uses mac and only mac, then most likely:
1) All handouts and materials will be catered for mac, and
2) All instructions will be written expecting you be using a mac, and
3) All school purchased tools/programs will be in mac version, and
4) Submitted works will be expected to be in mac format, etc.

The bottom line is, you might be able to get away with windows but some things might be smoother with a mac.

或者咁講，學校的 IT support 會支援學生在校內使用電腦的 troubleshooting，所以學校才會有電腦 model 的選擇。如你使用帶另一platform，當然或者都可以行到所有 apps。我舉一些例子：孩子和老師的 version 不完全配合，老師開唔到你孩子的 files，老師和 IT support 都會盡量協助你；有些 Wifi network 不完全 support 所有的電腦 wifi card，你孩子在學校上網有困難，IT support 都會盡量幫你 ... 但幫唔到你，咁你咪最多繼續 complain... 但點解要孩子面對咁多 hiccups ?
