係呀,我見身邊失敗例子多,有些直頭回一句" I hate chinese!" 只見一兩個成功例子。 ... The reason is simple, not all languages are equal.
Without any extra tuition or urging, most ESF Y1 pupils are already reading simple English books based on the phonics skills they acquired, but typically could only recognise a few Chinese words and so would struggle with even the simplest of Chinese books. If left to their own devices, 10 out of 10 children who are equally exposed to both languages would take the easier path and drop Chinese in favour of English. The 1 or 2 successful cases are really the results of extra tuition and much urging and sweat from the parents, so if Chinese is considered important it would be wise to not rely on ESF schools alone.
ESF also has a tough job to satisfy all, with families ranging from those who regard Chinese as a necessity to those who think of it as a nice to have. In no other subject would they find such a wide range of expectations.
