Can you give me some advice?

My son is Dec05 boy who is studying K2 now. As he is a super small boy, I am worried that he may not be able to catch up with the others in terms of self-discipline, emotion development , skills of taking care of himself...etc. ( he is quite ok in academic aspects esp English n Maths are quite good ). Talked with his class teacher, it is not advised to repeat K2. However, I am afraid he is too small n right not too not competitive enough to get a place in some popular DSS opr private primary school. Thus, right now, I have got a place for repeating K2 in Learning Habitat am class n going to take an interview in Keenmind for a K3 seat. What can I do? I have four options :
1. Repeat K2 in a new kindergarten
2. promoted to K3 in a new kinder
3. Stay in the existing kinder as a K3 student but do not take the gov't enrollment in september. Meanwhile, apply for soe targeted Dss or private schools. If my son failed all the application, then repeat K3 in the old kinder. If my son succeeded in getting a place in any targeted schools , then go ahead.
4. Do nothing. Stay at the old school. Appy for the DSS n private school , at the meantime, join the gov't enrollment as usual....

Can anybody help? I have to make decision b4 next Monday, the deadline for the K2 seat in LH...

THanks a billion!

I won't choose to repeat K2 which doesn't seem to do much help in terms of learning.

If he cannot get a DSS/ private school seat, enrol again next year while repeating K3. If your kid can get a seat, then take it. If he finds it hard to catch up in P1, repeat P1. That's my opinion.

choose 4.
make up your mind to prepare all the DSS, government, private school. Use your and your kid time to go for that instead of using the time to change another kinder, to adapt new environment. Don't say that your kid is super young, anything can happen. Famous DSS, private, government will have student with super young kid.
Start prepare now, many DSS, Private are going to have all the briefing session, and application....

If kid is super small, amd u willing to be a repeater. I will be K3 repeater not K2, due learning in K3 is useful then K2.

Use option 3, go for DSS/Private school, not Govt Sch.
Point system and/or LuckyDraw can not repeat for same child in diff. year.
Please check it clearly with EB when u select option 4.

My kid is also small so I understand your concern very much. Now, for famous brand name schools, the curriculum is very hard, like P1 teaching P2 curriculum. So, thinking about repeating is also a way out. For small kids, they don't really understand how it feels to repeat and it depends on how you present it to him. So observe him and see if he can get good results first. If he finds it hard to cope with it, repeat later.

I have given up the seat in LH ar a k2 repeater . However, I am still wondering ( 1 )if I should let him stay at the existing kinder in k3 n just apply for the DSS n private pri school and join the gov't allocation the next year if my son failed all the interviews this year. ( 2 )Another choice is to get a new seat in a more famous kinder in K3 n apply the DSS n private pri school only. (3 )The last option is, to take te usual practice, study in K3 in te existing kinder, apply for all kinds of pri schools( the usual practice for the p1 admission

Thanks a billion for your valuable advice!!

It's not very useful transferring to a more famous kindergarten as the kid starts interviews this Sept. You'll still need to to hand in his report card of the old kindergarten. LH is ok I think, comparable to those KLT ones. Unless you transfer him to a kindergarten with primary section through train.

Clarawsf, my son is also Dec 05.  I let him repeat K1.  It's amazing to see how much he has improved in one year.  In his first year K1, his self-confidence was not good since so many things that the others can do much better than him.  He was shy and did not want to express himself in the class.  He is now in his 2nd year K1 and gained much self-confidence to be a "big boy".  I am so happy to see that he is now a proactive and out-spoken boy.

In my opinion, it's better to repeat earlier since the kid can gain his/her self-confidence earlier.

if i were you, i will choose option 4. According to your description, your son's quite up to standard except he is a super small kid. If he has significant delay or low self confidence issue, then repeat K2 maybe a good option for his long term development. It's not very wise to change the kinder in the middle of K2 as it takes lots of time for the child to adjust to the new environment - you should consider it only if you son dislike the current kinder very much.

It's the fact that being a small kid will be more difficult to compete during the process. If you are very very keen to get into the top DSS/private school, you may want to consider the option of repeat (reminder - however, some DSS schools may also has a higher expectation towards the super big kid and it may be a disadvantage for the super big kids if they are not very bright). If DSS/private schools are NOT a MUST for you, then you should go for option 4.

After all, he is your son, listen your heart and you will know what to choose.

Thanks for your advice! Up to this moment, I will let my son study in the current kinder n right now am going to apply for DSS n private schools. However, I am planning not to apply for Gov't enrollment. If my boy failed all the application, is it right to let him repeat K3 n apply for all kinds of schools? I am wondering if I should let him go for the gov't enrollment this year.....

Can anyone help?

I would go for the government enrollment this year. The competition is less keen compared with next year. It will only be more difficult and less chance to get into a good school.

K3 kids already know a lot of things, and may aware of the fact that all of his classmates are going to be P1 students in 2011 September.

You have to prepare him psychologically for attending interviews, which means he will expect to be one of the P1 students in the coming year.

On the other hand, you can't give him too much hope, as he might fail to get into your desire DSS/ private schools.

Kg and primary school means a big difference for kids. Which means it would not be an easy job.
