You may also try speech therapy.

My daughter is also 4-years-old. She has also some minor  problem. After speech therapy for 6 private session ($2xxx in total). Most of the mistakes were completely corrected. It's better to correct as soon as possible.

以前我囡囡都有這個問題, 後來經健康院寫信到公立醫院做評估和治療, 現在巳經改善很多了. 不過那次我排期都要等大約半年時間才有得睇.

My son, aged 4 now got some problems in pronouncing some sounds like 'f'. He is now attending frequent language therapy offered by the public hospital. However, the progress is not so satisfactory. As far as I see, the language therapist there is not so professional. Moreover, she is too young and not so patient.

So, I am now considering finding a private therapist. Would you recommend yours to me?

I would like to get some more info from you: -
1. How frequent do you bring your daughter to see the therapist? Once a month or even more frequent?
2. Any practice that you should do with your child after each visit?
3. Is your daughter still receiving the therapy? Completed?

Dear Vanilla,

I'd highly recommend my therapist to you, she's very patient and professional.

1. I usually bring my daughter to the speech therapy once a week, sometimes once per 2 weeks when I'm too busy or my daughter was sick.

2. I've to practice a lot with my kid, at least 3-4 times (about 15 min each time) between each visit. Actually I'm the one to go to learn the technique to teach and practice with my kid. I've to postpone the appointment when I did'nt have enough time to practice with my daughter.

3. My daughter has completed the therapy. The therapist is so nice that she has given an extra lesson (about 20 min) to follow-up my daughter, but my daughter still cannot 100% achieve that sound. Then she offered us to come back to follow-up for the second time. i.e. the last 2 follow-up session is not charged.

I'll PM you the info of the therapist.

You just can't solely rely on the therapy.

In fact, I practice a lot with my son what I have learned in the lesson. However, I really did not learn much from the therapist. Like this afternoon, I brought my son to see the therapist. She spared just 5-10 minutes with us. During the process, my son has switched his head once to see the surrounding (honestly, I think this is quite common for kids of 4 years old because they are very curious). Then the therapist 'banged' the table and urged my son back. That's why I say, she is not patient. Moreover, just 5-10 minutes for a monthly visit is quite short. Nothing material can be taught. Moreover, bringing him in and out and waiting in the clinic already has taken me nearly 3 hours. However, 3 hours for just 5-10 minutes. Does it worth?

So, I am considering bringing him to see private therapists. I do not want to waste time any more.

Many a time, I think the government resources are not efficiently being utilized --- time and money have been spent but no results.

Sorry for my grievances.

I called the centre this evening. The receptionist told me that the assessment fee is $750. After the assessment, recommendation on therapy package will be made by the therapist. There is now a package like 4 lessions of 30 min each, charges $1500.

Is this the package that you took recently?

BTW, how old was your daughter when she started the therapy? What were her previous speech problems? (P.S. My son got marginal expressive delay and some pronounciation problems on sounds like 'f'.)

10 minutes is totally unacceptable. One section is 30 minutes and the therapist should spend at least 25 minutes with you. Can you try to change the therapist ? Or you can request to change to another hospital.

It's good to consult the private therapist. The standard of private therapists should be higher than those in the government hostipals.

Yes, there is an assessment at the first meeting. After the assessment, the therapist suggested my daughter for package either 6 sessions x 30min or 4 sessions x 45min. Both are $2200. She said this package should probably be enough to correct my daughter's problems,and one extra session for $400 per 30min may be required.

Finally my daughter finished the therapy by 6 sessions. No extra session was added, while 2 short follow-up sessions were given. Hence, I spent $750+$2200 in total.
