Dear wah37,
For patience, I have got little tricks you might try.
Bought some small toys, such as a small squeezable doll which size is less than his paw. Small toys you might bought in 7-11. He has to like playing w/ it but not his favourite so as to avoid obsession & divert too much of his attention. I have got a toy camera with a few buttons, a little doll and a small writing & erasable pad from"Mujji". Once he lost his patience in lining up or need waiting such as waiting other kids dining, you should let him play with his toys. Those toys not only keep him on track & retreatable, but also provide a little training in sensory, fine motor & attention sklls.
For the time you can't use toy or even words in warning (like wedding, church, funeral, ceremony, etc) or some sudden event but need to keep him in silence or still,
first try is to lower down your self with some eye contact if possible, stop him by putting your hand on his chest, rug his chest if possible. Hug him or even hold me if allowed and then ask him to calm or tell him follow what u want him to do. The last thing you should do is to leave the place & comfort/ask him in a private corner if he still in struggle or something. Above steps is selective, u dont need to do every step in one issue. Saying like your kid jump a line, you just have to lower yrself & put yr hand to stop him & ask him to queue.
Pls remember non-autistic kids also has problem in patience & impulsiveness. It is not a "franchise" to autism. Dont treat as it is a feature of autism.
Talk more about impulsivenss next time if you wan to know. |
