language choices for IB?

If I want to let my child to learn a language so that she can take a elective under IB, which language is better? She likes German while I believe Spanish and French are easier and more popular? May I have your valuable opinion? Thanks

I think you should let your child make the choice.
Anything is not hard if you like it.

I think is not about which language is harder to learn, is about how hard to  find good teachers and supports for learning the language. In HK I think Spanish and French are more approachable. Mind you these language teachers are usually expats and they might not settle in HK for long, and you need to find replacement from time to time. In HK French Alliance is a good place to learn French too.

are you sure you want to do an IB language subject without following school curriculum?  What do you tell school?   You say your child will not do French or Spanish in the school and instead you find s9me outside tutors for German?  Does it make sense?   or d9 you plan to do one extra subject on top of the standard subjects provided by the school, ie sit for IB 3 languages ?   I am confused.

German is not easy.

A few friends of mine learn German for various reasons. They all learn German at GOETHE-INSTITUT, apparently that's the place to go to learn German in HK.

Your daughter can try out German during her summer holiday and see if she likes it.

You can do German for IB, KGV has IB German at school.

Maybe you just send her to the German summer course and see if she really likes it that much. My thought is why take a more cumbersome route if school provided Spanish and french already.

If German is not easy, neither French nor Spanish, vice versa. I have learnt a number of European language, I find Latin the hardest, grammatically. German, in terms of pronunciation, is easy because of its spelling-sound consistency (I am sure there is a jargon for this consistency, ask a linguist). Spanish and French are of the same difficulty to me as to pronunciation and grammar. Swedish is not difficult if you have ordinary English proficiency yet its pronunciation (tone) is a bit challenging.

Since you are asking IB, I assume your child is about to take IB diploma (year12).  For IB, you only need to take two languages. English plus another language (Chinese, Spanish, French and German). There are 3 categories, being first language (if so, u get a bilingual diploma), second language and beginners level. For 1st n 2nd language, it's further classified into SL and HL.  I know only a very few schools in hk offer IB German (only GSIS and KGV afa I'm aware of). You might need to follow school curriculum for IB choices as that involves ongoing assessments and the school mock exam in year 13 will get you the predicted grades for university application. You might need to check with your school and your child is very keen to do German, then you might need to change to another school.

why start with a question of IB German when there does not seem to be a sensible option.

if she likes German, just do German as a ECA.

我印象中, KGV 有 德文

但德文, 法文, 極難 在IB

我舉例, KGV year 12 IB 法文班男同學, 已讀到叫救命

IGCSE 法文爆晒分,好好成績

上到IB , 無法適應

法文, 與英文相似, 所以KGV 多印度人選法文

德文, 法文皆難, 且是極難學



英基法文IGCSE 一般有60-70% A/A*

上到IB, 找個7分都難

如果德瑞德文勁個班, year 10 考igcse 德文,

year 11 考as level 德文, 女仔較多

德瑞考EDEXCEL ALEVEL 德文

梁齊昕德文都讀得不好, 俾德文打底

接受訪問時,  都講德文難, 不憤氣德文讀得不好

父母無限資源的佢, 都攪不懂德文, 可見德文難度極深

德文是歐洲語言中最難學的

學到不想學, 由喜歡到痛恨只是一念之間

梁齊欣小學是local school SPCC, yr7才去GSIS 讀了幾年，當然學不好德文，冇人會以佢為benchmark
