My daughter's private piano teacher charge $650/4 lesson which each lesson last 30mins. As she've finished grade 8 only with no other dip or degree, every lesson she mainly teach the songs and seldom ask me to help or improve my girl in any particular area. She give the comment to my girl is that she learns fast but dont want to push her for exam, rather she wants to secure her foundation and let her enjoy more first.

So I am confused if she is reliable and responsible or not, and is it reasonable for $162.5/30mins?

I think you can consider :

(1) She is patient to your kid in teaching ?
(2) Your kid enjoys in her class and keep a resonable progress.
(3) $162.5/30mins is quite marks up compare with some piano co. but not too much.

I didnt negotiate any from the beginning, may be that is the reason why it is quite expensive.

I think she is patient enough to my active daughter. But just worry when i found she is not the kind of demanding teacher n not that much of expectation on my girl.

As I suggested to extend to 45mins during the summer holiday before, she said it may be a good idea because during the time she can have more time to prepare my daughter for the grade3 exam in sept06. One the other side, the fee will be $920/4 lesson which is cheaper than before.

But now I m lost!!!

Sometime it depands on the experience that he / she have. If he / she just have grade 8, with no cert or not Music student, and very limited experience, probably he / she will be over charged.

我估初時佢胡亂開高了價，而你又肯落疊，到現在$920/4 lesson /45mins，似乎合理些(計埋期間升了級的因素)，當然也不算平。一般黎講，這個程度和上課時間，$750-800已經得。

She is a experienced but a part time piano teacher who recommended by my friend. She said she will start to prepare for exam fr Oct this year, in the mean time, she will still teach some other new song every lesson. Is that the normal practice?

Will your children have writing homework beside?

My son's piano teacher has completed Grade 8 herself, she is referred by my 表姨甥(who himself graduated from HK Academy for Performing Arts) who is her piano teacher and preparing her for performance dip. exam, she is a part-time piano teacher in a piano studio and a full-time U student (not in music).

My son's level is now end of grade 1, at my request she is not preparing my son for piano exams yet, will wait until higher grade, about 45 mins per lesson, 上門教。

She charged me $450 / 4 lessons when she started to teach my son in late Aug 2004, my son just reached level equivalent to start of grade 1 then, (our previous piano teacher left HK).
Since late Dec 2004 I have increased the fees slightly to $500 / 4 lessons without her asking.

Cost can not be judged by the qualification of the teacher.  I also need to consider the output and how much the teacher gives your child.

If you find the teacher is OK and your daughter likes her and you satisfy with the progress of your daughter.  Then go ahead.  Always change teachers is not good things.  I think an experienced teahcers with 8 grades is good enough to teach piano under grade 5.  You can discuss with the teacher what you want her to give your child like writing homework.

How old and how long time your child learn piano?

my daughter is 8 this coming Aug, and  hv learned piano since Jun03, that is 2 yrs.
she learned in 柏斯 in festival walk until sep04, then chg to this teacher starting fr the beginning of grade 2 then up to now, means 9 mths.

following the text bk now using:
1. everybody likes the piano-bk 2
2. john thompson's 2nd grade
3. hanon-bk1
4. new czerny-bk1

as u can see they're all btw grade 1-2, so i m wondering if my girl able to finish every things plus bks of grade3 within one yr for the exam ?
