所以EDB就經常講Teaching English through Language Arts (即文學) e.g. Stories, Poem, Drama等, 但是現在越來越多學校歪曲了這件事, Teaching English through Language Arts 不是Teaching English Language Arts. EDB並不是想學生只去欣賞一首英文詩,而是從詩中學到如何運用文法,這是很多老師(尤其外國人)不明白的東西,Grammar rule 其實唔係無用,但係要加以運用,但又不能只運用.要拿一個平衡實在很難...

唔好講香港, 就算UK自己都未搵到一個平衡點. 如果唔係都唔會有一代英國人話唔識GRAMMAR RULE LA.

I think an acceptable grammar base is needed in order to build upon it more complex sentence structures etc.
I also agree that most students in HK have the wrong focus - being a master of all the grammar rules doesn't necessarily mean being a master in the English language. I truly think there's more to learning English than merely learning an aspect (grammar) of it.

回覆:初中升新高中英語銜接問題

Your question is interesting, I would like to know your intention is discussing of CMI and or EMI students to catch up the total different approaches to learn English in the high school. Am I correct?

Actually, I teach in an EMI school. Students there are supposedly more able. However, I do find the same problem there as in CMI that students turn back to grammar drilling and vocabulary building whenever assessment approaches. It is also the method we test students causes the trouble. No matter how communicative my lesson is, things fall back when assessment comes and we have to make sure that students grasp all the 'exam skills'. Well, somehow, they are not really language skills, so I think the interesting and bizarre part of this is that we tend to westernize our secondary school teaching, but the assessment itself hasn't yet caught up.

In my opinion, the focus of DSE has already been shifted (the weighting on grammar is less) when compared with the past! For junior form students, they really need a solid foundation on grammar, but for senior form students, they need more exposure to English, no matter it is language arts or non-language arts!
