Dear all,
About sensory problem in clothing, it is a common problem for both delayed or non-delayed kids. Of course, the best way is to rectify the sensory deficiency in long run. (In long run, we all dead??? Hahaha…) In short to immediate term, some ideas could share with u but please understand each person is different and u need to judge which one works.
Some kids are over-sensitive to certain materials like flax or nylon, so u might need to get rid of them. (Easiest way perhaps is to only buy 100% cotton, exp down jacket???) For those being insensitive to the cold, they would get rid of a jacket since they don’t feel it. The idea of wearing outing cloths or school uniform at sleep is ok but might not be practical for all times. Other than using reinforcement, a few things u might try,
Synchronization 同步化 - Wearing outing clothes at sleep is also using synchronization method. But to make yr kid more comfortable, before u go out or go to school (perhaps one hour before), u might start to lower the indoor temperature similar to outside temperature. After 15-30 mins, ask your kid to wear a sweater or a jacket at home first (perhpas for 30-45 mins) since indoor temperature already dropped. By then, u don’t need to ask yr kid to wear any extra when u are going out.
Organization of logic and norm - Pre-set a standard of cloths at occasions/situation. Saying like a standard school uniform must come with a jacket, or a standard outdoor dress code at temperature below 15C must come with a coat or a down jacket, etc. Ask yr school teacher to remind yr kid to wear a jacket when going to school, etc.
De-organization of logic and norm - Ask your kid to wear a jacket or school uniform at home (esp. when the weather is cold) even though u are not considering to go out. Try to break the line between clothes in pre-set occasions if necessary. U could easier ask him to wear SOMETHING when necessary. Of course, it contradicts with the one mentioned before. U need to judge which one works in diff. situation. This one also helps a bit creativity.
Extension rule - Ask your kid to wear 5 mins, 10 mins or 15 mins, longer in each time if necessary. Or bring a few clothes for him to change once he took it off.
Mirroring - Taking a photo of what classmates wearing when it is cold or showing a photo of what he himself is wearing last yr when it is cold. Of course ask him to follow what he needs to wear as the photos showed.
