I always thought it was a not for profit organization, esp with previous government funding. But there is probably some profit element to it? Where does the profit ultimately go?
I think key difference for profit is that they pay rent at market rate and if it's a non profit school they only pay hkd1 rent per year (象徵式)?
In fact it's so hard to find out which schools are for profit (e.g profit goes to investor/owner) and not for profit. Any one know how o can find out further?

everything is for profit in this world, nothing is not non-profit even charity organization. The management can somehow make a profit out of it. The fact is IS in school is attracting more company into this business.

I want to know because it tells me where the tuition money goes to - to the owner/investors or back to the school itself. It's just an additional piece of information that parents should know.
Having said that I'm sure there are lots of good schools that are for profit as I supposed they are run more efficiently so maybe it can save costs.
I guess another part of my question is the hkd1 land rent per year. That would make a massive difference in the schools' cost if certain school get this benefit.

I am pretty sure your definition of non-profit making, ie hkd1 for land lease is incorrect.

don't we have enough to consider when choosing a school, why non profit or not be yet another criteria to consider?
The more bizzare a thing is, the less mysterious it proves to be.

Dear Di2015.

I find your comments very interesting.

On Invest HK website, our HK government has told us that as of March 2010, there were over 23,300 non-profit organisations in Hong Kong, of which 6,380 were approved charitable organisations.

Not all ‘voluntary’ or so-called ‘non-profit-making’ organisations are charities. Basically you can pay $$18K to set up a charitable organisation in the name of advancement of education and get tax exemptions.
