Why they don’t play the piano after passing grade 7 exam ?

I have just talked with the colleagues. We have known 6 children from different family backgrounds ( i.e. some are their relatives, some are their kids ) with the same performance. These children have learned piano since 4 to 7 years old. They have passed the grade 7 or 6 at Secondary Form 2 to 4. They refused or couldn’t catch up to further piano examination after passing grade 7. The similar excuse is the heavy loaded homework and project in school.  It’s fine.

The question is that these children have not played or even touched their piano since they do not learn piano. In fact, they have a Grade 6 or 7 qualifications. They should be able to play a lot of wonderful songs, shouldn’t they ?  Why they don’t play the piano as a hobby ? Are they all not enjoy to play the piano ? Any moms can share your views with me ?

personally, I have at least 5 close friends in their 30s who never touched the piano after passing Grade 6, 7.
When I asked them why, they all said they learnt the piano and took exams because mommy said so. (all of them gave the same answer) None of them really liked playing the piano that much.In fact, at parties when we (those who never learnt piano before)requested for impromptu performance, all said they couldnt play the piano.

It's very shock to me that if a kid who has learned piano for over seven to eight years and will give it up so easy. Furthermore, to play an impromptu performance is even impossible for them. It's really very very shock to me ! They have passed the sight reading in Grade 7 exam ? !!  

I let the kid to learn piano or violin, I just want them to have the music to accompany with his life. They might play the piano when they are happy or sad. I also believed that piano can help them to balance their living. But …… if the kids will don’t play the piano at all after their examination. Are they hate to play it ? Why we put so much effort to push them to learn piano ? Are we wasting the time and money ?

I share the same as AAma_Betty, the requirement for grade 8 is so high, the gap between grade 7 and 8 is so high, a lot of people give up finally.

I also want to mentioned that people who passed the grade 6 or 7 exam, it doesn't mean that they are really up to the standard, due to parent's expectation, piano teacher always send their student to attend the piano exam even they are not up to that level, because everyone here in Hong Kong like to obtain "certificate" whatever it is. The kids learned piano just working for "certificate", not really out from the heart, so that's why when they grow up, they don't even want to touch the piano anymore.
