Headach for panio teacher

My kid has been learning panio for 1 year.  During this time, she had changed to other teacher due to some family issue on the previous one.  However, I found that my kid is not so enjoying the panio with the new teacher. It has been two months now.  I am struggling to change a new teacher again.  My concern is that the 1st teacher aroused much interest for kid to learn panio.  My kid used to learn some new songs, when she came back, she can play some new songs and she is very happy.  The 2nd one, teacher started from the very basic one again.  Instead of teaching some songs, she only teach how to position the fingers. My kid lost interest and for most of the time, she doesn't understand what the teacher is talking about.  I really don't have the clue which should be the right way to teach kid on panio.  Is there any sharing?  Also, is there any recommendation for panio teacher? I really want to have a good one, so my kid will continue to learn.  I am not keen on pushing her for exam. Since I find my kid really likes panio, I want to develop her in this area.  Please help.
My kid is currently at age 6.

Re: Headach for panio teacher

I can understand the reason why the new piano teacher did all the basic stuff again. It is probably that your kid might not have a good hand position.
Check if your kid has all the fingers curved nicely, not flattened when playing. Are the thumb and the little finger standing up when playing the key? Are the wrists dropping on the piano?

It is because if the foundation is not laid out nicely, the wrong technique will hinder your kid's development. It will take twice the effort to correct the position, and perhaps, it will be too much pain to correct!

The problem is that often the kid is too small to understand the rationale of this, and will lose interest in learning, which is very depressing!

I believe that your kid must have a lot of favourite pieces. I suggest that you could let your kid to play them a lot (repetition reinforces the technique). Now observe the hand position and posture (talk to your piano teacher about it). Use game to help your kid to improve the hand position. For example, if the kid could practice all the notes with nice tall finger, give him/her a sticker. For every 50 stickers collected, he/she could get a reward, like having pizza with daddy. There are endless possibilities in games! You would never run out of idea. With my students, I used to take out a puppet. The puppet will bite the finger that is flattened when played. It was so funny that we ended up laughing so hard!

As a parent, you need to help and support your kid. Practice with your kid at this stage, to help him/her correct his/her position, in an interesting and fun way. In a period of time, I believe that your kid will progress even faster!

All the best, happy practising!
