Hi, my son is a kiwi passport holder, now studying at Anfield. I m interested to enroll him to AISHK in reception. Anyone could advise me how the interview will look like and what sort of questions will be asked? Many thanks!

Have you applied it yet? You need to apply two years advance. Which means you can apply it in Jan 2015 if your son is ready for the reception year in 2017.

No, not yet, just want to start the background research before action

There is a long queue. Once you applied, you have to wait for the assessment ( interview). You better apply it first at least line up in the queue.

Interview is simple in Reception
I am surprised that the school would use no crying as a yard stick to measure success

I think they cannot proceed with a proper interview when the child cries. And there is too many interviews to work with in limited time.

Only 3 yrs old to follow a stranger to interview, it's hard!

You need to train him if you want him to go for the interview. I put my little one to putonghua playgroup and music playgroup as ECA since he was 2.5 yrs old. When he had the interview, he was the only Chinese boy among the 4, he was the only one who followed the teacher happily and came back with a big smile after the interview and he's accepted.

Yes, is hard and is not reasonable to me, however the majority of parents are training the kids to adapt to it. Just crazy here

Yes...it's crazy but as a parents, we have not choice. Nowadays, the placement is very competitive not just in local schools but for international schools too. Even in ESF, if the kids are crying or not response to the teachers will fail in the interview.
The thing is if your child is shy and not get use to be with strangers, I would suggest to apply a year later to the preparatory class instead of reception. But bear in mind that when the interview conduct, your kid is already in the kindy for almost a year and should get used to the school environment.
From what I remember if a child is fail the interview for the reception class their name will rollover to next year (but not 100% sure) because the application fee is for 2 years.
Good luck.

Very true. In CDNIS they actually take the children in groups from the library, walk them down a flight of STAIRS, down a long corridor and into their respective interview classrooms before the actual interview begins. Many kids going for the pre-reception interview cried (mind you they were only 2-year-olds!)
Going to different playgroups definitely helps. I actually started with leaving my child in his French playgroup classroom (which he loves and is familiar with) when he was almost 2, just to test to make sure he was okay. We then slowly proceeded to have him go to various playgroups himself (His interviews happened 2 months after he turned age 2). Thank goodness he doesn't have much separation issues (just severe compliance issues at the time
) Yes, this is insane, and good separation can only get them through the door only (literally and in all practicality).

You mean if you apply early (as in two years in advance) and if the child has Australian citizenship? Yes, at least when i called the school back in 2012 that was the case; not sure about now, but if you apply early and have citizenship priority, the staff there mentioned the chance of getting in would be high.

Yes, you are right. I have applied 2016 reception year for my son at the early of last year. And we are Austlian citizen. The admission officer has told me there are only two classes for reception year (20 kids per class) and one of it for siblings. That means only one class for applicants like us. That's why I wan to know if my son got high chance to get in. Is your kid study at AISHK?
作者: jolalee 時間: 15-1-23 23:30
When you said "early", i hope it was within the first two weeks of January in 2014? My husband is Australian citizen and i'm Canadian, so we're really lucky to have citizenship priority for two good IS in HK. Our boy should be a year old than yours. Last March we received email notification from AISHK for the interview, but since we have already gotten into our top choice by then, we thankfully declined the invitation. From what i heard the interview itself should not be difficult, just the standard international school interviews. Application date & priority does play an important role, so i think you are already on the right track. Good luck the rest of the way!!

From what I heard not too long ago the waiting lists were already very long for their early childhood years (reception to Year 2), and that's why they ask the parents to apply 2 years in advance (even for those with siblings in the school). The lists get shorter in higher grades and there might even be vacancies in some secondary years.

Hi, so if I understand it correctly, even if we have Aussie passport and I apply 2 years in advance - my daughter must still attend an interview and the competition is fierce? Their website seems to suggest that interview is not mandatory - depends on what the principal decides?
Hope someone can clarify for me, many thanks!
Hoping to apply for Reception.

Hi thanks for your reply! And congrats for offer! May I know if you are an English speaking family? Did you need to submit school reports from nursery or K1?

I agree it is not unreasonable. We attended the interview at SIS and majority of the 3+ years old kids did not cry. If they are currently attending schools, they should rightfully be used to a school setting. Of course it also depends on the atmosphere of the interview.
